Newbie here...question about fertlizer
I'm starting my first garden this spring and a lady I work with is giving away chicken manure. Is this a good fertilizer for veggies? Should I ask for some? Anything special I should know about it? I appreciate any advice. TIA.

I'm new to this board, but here's my thoughts...
For the past 10 years, H used mostly steer manure and had wonderful results. When I started gardening with him, I tried adding chicken with it and again, great results.
Last summer H went to a seminar with the "manure and MiracleGro are bad" theme and we tried using other more organic fertilizers. We had a total of 3 tomatoes on ALL of our 8 plants. Our cucumbers grew, but not in the plentiful bounty of prior years. In short, this was not the right method for us and our soil.
We planted our veggies last weekend and went back to using manure and testing the acid/alkaline -ness of our soil.
Before ruling manure out, I would talk to neighbors and others in your area about how your natural soil is and what they are using.
manure is actually fine (and good) for gardening but you want to make sure it's aged and not fresh. I've heard chicken manure is actually super fantastic. A small bag of it at my local is very pricey.
