I need help choosing between an iMac (21.5? screen) and a Gateway PC (Intel quad core processor).
I want to use the computer for the basic internet, office stuff, converting VHS to DVD, slides to pictures and learning how to edit pictures.
Here are my thoughts on the computers:
iMac- Pros: Everyone loves it, great editing software. Cons: Expensive and I've never used a Mac.
PC- Pros: Less expensive ($499 for the CPU), I can buy a larger monitor, and I?m getting it at Costco, which has a great warranty. Plus, I have the VHS and slide converter equipment and software already.
Which do you think I should go with? And if I do go with Mac, do you think I need to get the 3 year extended warranty for $150 from Best Buy?
Thanks so much for your help!

Re: Mac vs. PC?
You have the hardware for the PC for what you have said you will do with your computer. IMO, there is no need to spend extra to get the same hardware that connects to an even more expensive computer. You can get some awesome photo editing software on your PC.
There is nothing wrong with owning a PC. I actually think that buying a Mac because "everyone likes it" is not a good idea. That being said, you also should not shy away from a Mac just because you've never used one; they're pretty easy to figure out.

Well, I had a dell laptop for work until a couple months ago. Against my wishes, the office bought me a Mac instead of a new laptop. I don't handle graphic design like some of our other staffers, and quite frankly I found the Mac to be intimidating...still do. If you use excel a lot, do NOT get the Mac. It's just not user friendly like it is on a regular PC.
I say, if you're only using it for those things that you indicated, you should get a PC.
I love my mac and would never go back to a PC. For photo management and editing it is superior. And I think the Mac is MORE user-friendly than the PC, it just takes a little while to get used to it. However, I hate running Microsoft Office on the Mac. I use the iWork stuff and that works great but it's not 100% compatible with MS software so if you have to use that a lot it might not work as well for you.
I don't have an imac though. I have a Macbook Pro and at work it is hooked up to an external monitor. However, if the Mac is going to be much more than the PC you might want to stick with the PC.

I am a huge mac fan - more than a pc, but I bought an iMac in 2007 and no longer use it for my main computer. Once any part goes/breaks/needs an upgrade (including the monitor), the entire computer is toast - because Apple uses all proprietary parts. I successfuly swapped out a harddrive, but the graphics chip was bad in the model I have.
If you do go with the iMac, definitely get the 3 year warranty. Sadly mine ran out just in time for us to realize the graphics chip was bad.
Get the spec'd out PC and put Linux on it
"They say with time it gets better. Not true. With time you only get used to it."
I recommend the iMac if you are going to do a lot of video and picture editing. The Mac in general is quicker in video and picture editing. I use both Mac and PC, and I prefer my Mac for those kinds of jobs.
