Reccomend your paint!

I am getting ready to paint our house (interior), and I want to use a low VOC, less toxic paint.  What do you recommend that is good quality and safe to use in the home?

Re: Reccomend your paint!

  • I know Home Depot had a VOC free line.

We use a VOC free which is made from natural pigments. You mix more color into the non-toxic base in yourself if you want a little variation in your color. (kind of like a speckled egg).

I am doing some painting in the States in May and am interested in the answers you'll get.

  • Many latex paints are low-VOC. Low-VOC is so common that some paints like Glidden and Zinsser don't even label themselves as such. In contrast, a brand that I think tends towards green-washing like Martha Stewart's new line at Home Depot has low-VOC splashed on the label but it contains the exact same amount of VOCs as Glidden and some Duron paints. So, what you probably want is zero VOCs. At Lowe's the brand is Olympic--it is under $20 per gallon but a bit runny. We primarily use this because of cost. At Home Depot, the zero VOC brand is FreshAire for under $35 per gallon. These come in limited colors because, from what I understand, the pigment they use is also zero VOC. Other zero VOC brands use normal pigment which adds a marginal amount of VOCs. It is a thicker paint than Olympic.

There also are more premium zero VOC paints from Sherwin Williams, etc. They are about $45 per gallon, I believe.

You also can get soy-based paints at specialy green home-improvements store (the closest one to me is in another state, so I have not been there) or milk paint which you buy dry and mix with water. I have seen it, but not used it. I have heard that it works very differently that today's paints.

  • i love benjamin moore paint but have never used their Natura line.

i've recently used some Olympic no VOC from lowes and it was pretty good, definitely needed 2 coats.

  • Thanks, I'm new to painting AND new to all the "green" stuff, so its a whole new world to me! :)
