Square Foot Gardening question
I've been reading a lot about square foot gardening, since that seems to be the preferred method for vegetable gardens now. We have a 15x9 raised bed left from the previous homeowners and thought we'd use this for our garden. Everything I'm reading talks about much smaller dimensions. Would it be possible to do small 3x2 beds within the larger bed? We'd have 9 total and about 2ft between each bed. I'm worried about weeds/spreading in the extra space. Any advice? With a 15x9 bed are we better off just doing rows?
Re: Square Foot Gardening question
I don't think SFG is necessarily better than traditional row-style, especially if you have lots of space.
We put a thick layer of mulch down between our beds. And I would recommend 3 feet between beds so that you can kneel, get a wheelbarrow through, etc. Also, your SFG beds can be up to 4 feet wide and as long as you want...so you could do 3 4x9 beds or something
I think the only issue with using larger beds for SFGing is that it is more difficult to access some of the middle plots. You are never suppose to walk on the soil of a SFG as the pressure is very bad for the roots which are not protected by much soil.
If you can still access your center squares without stepping on the soil then this shouldn't be a problem. If not, maybe make a few access cut-outs with no soil (e.g. small rocks).
Good luck!
