Staples for overnight guests

Whenever I have a houseguest for a night or two, I always make sure I have chips & salsa, a frozen pizza, and a tube of cinnamon rolls on hand.  Does anyone have any go-to staples for guests?

Re: Staples for overnight guests

  • I always place bottled water in their room with some fresh fruit.
  • Aside from fresh towels and bedsheets, I always like to have cheese and crackers, ice cream, and possibly some wine or other beverages that they might like.

  • We don't really eat breakfast, but generally our houseguests do, so I have to stock up on all breakfast foods: eggs, bacon, grits, OJ and a can of crescent rolls ;)

I make sure I have spaghetti & sauce.  If I'm late at work, anyone can go in the pantry and grab the noodles.

After that, I tailor the food to the guests: Oreos for my mom, special coffee for MIL.  I plan all meals, generally weeks in advance.

  • We nearly always have chips, salsa, crackers and cheese  in the house as well as stuff that would allow me to make a variety of meals.

The spare bathroom counter  has two sets of travel sized toiletries (different scents of soap, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash), new floss, travel size toothpaste, new toothbrushes, and a basket full of clean washclothes.  The top vanity drawer has new deoderant (male and female), tampons, pads, a first aid kit, new razors, cough drops, and I think there's some hairspray in there.  MIL thinks it's set up like a hotel with little things you might forget.  The vanity is really long, so it doesn't look cluttered.

ETA - I might leave a little something out in the guest room, last time the inlaws were here I left a box of chocolates from my trip to San Francisco on the bed for MIL.

  • Fresh linens, travel toiletries, fruit, whatever they like to drink, some sort of salty snack and some sort of homemade baked good.
  • OJ, milk, bottled water, various beers and wines/champagne. We usually dine out for most of the weekend when we have guests, but I do try to do a fancy grits casserole or frittata for one morning's breakfast/brunch.
  • We always make sure to check what kind of milk they like in their coffee. I can only use skim or I get sick, so I'm always bummed if we are guests and I can't use the milk. My MIL will only use 1/2 and 1/2 and my aunt only uses 2%.  We're picky people.
