I was lurking and saw your post -- I worked for an obgyn for 4 years we do NovaSure, Essure so I thought I'd share info with you.
super basic info
Essure is a non reversible form of birth control.
2 coils ( similar to a clicky pen ) are inserted into the fallopian tubes using a flexible cannula. tissue grows around the coils allowing sperm to not pass.
you will continue to be on birth control for 3 months ( most choose depo provera 150 mg IM injection) 3 months later you have to have an HSG (hysterosalpingogram) and they inject dye into your tubes -- if dye doesn't pass, the sperm can't either.
lengthy info
if you don't have any (large) fibroids/cysts, then Essure is relatively simple. generally depo provera is given to help thin the lining of the uterus.
you are NPO after midnight and take 1 Valium and 1 Vicodin 1 hour before the procedure. then you are given a shot of Demerol. once you are back in the room, you are given a cervical block. the plastic flexible cannula is inserted thru the vagina and two coils are inserted into your fallopian tubes ( they are about 3/4 of an inch long and maybe 1/2 inch wide ) pictures are taken of the coils in the tubes then you are escorted to a recovery room for 15 minutes and driven home. some people return to work in 2 days, some the next day !
follow up with HSG in 3 months
just remember its permanent.
