XP: PIP of latest crochet project

I got a little ambitious and decided last Tuesday to start a baby blanket to give to my friend at her baby shower on Saturday.  My first mistake was making it too wide, which resulted in me needing to buy more yarn instead of just using up my stash like I'd planned.

Bigger also meant it took longer to make so...I ended up finishing it in the car while she opened her other gifts Stick out tongue

Re: XP: PIP of latest crochet project

  • Wow, you finished that in one week! Holy moly! It has taken me one month to finish five rows for a blanket.

Is it just practice that makes you get faster?

    BTW, I love it!

  • Well, technically it was five days Wink

You definitely get faster the more you do it.  Plus this pattern was really simple, just double crochet over and over again.

What are you making?  Post pics when you're done!

Fun!  I've been really into green/brown combos lately, especially in my wardrobe.

  • Love it! You are talented! I really hope I can figure out how to crochet-- I started learning last summer and haven't tried it in a few months.
  • That is wonderful.  Home made baby blankets are so sweet.  You are really talented!
  • That came out awesome! What a sweet gift :-)

  • Wow, that is awesome!  How did you learn to crochet?  I tried to teach myself how to knit.  I made a few things but got too frustrated.

Five days!!?? Oh man! This is why I need to learn how to crochet... It clearly works up MUCH faster than knitting! That would've taken me weeks to knit!

It looks awesome, you're so talented!

  • HalleyGirl: I learned through a combination of a friend, books, and online videos.  My friend showed me how to start a chain and the single and double crochet stitches (which is 99% of what you need to know in order to crochet successfully), but after I came home (she's in Cali) I basically had to watch YouTube videos to really get a handle on how to do the stitches.  I also took a bunch of books out from the library to learn specific things, but honestly the hardest part is just learning how to read the patterns.  It's really a pretty easy craft to learn IMHO, much easier to learn than knitting and more instantly gratifying (see my comments to Andrea below).  Give it a shot, you might like it better than knitting!

Andrea: I agree, crochet works up much faster than knitting!  I just started learning how to knit a couple of months ago so part of it is that I'm just not as proficient with it as I am with crocheting, but my more experienced friend has always said that crochet is quicker.  I like the instant gratification :)

  • Nice work, and such a sweet gift.  I can't believe that you put that together so fast!

I didn't realize that crochet is more quickly done.  That's interesting.  I haven't tried crochet in a very long time, though I recent tried to get back into knitting.
  • Oh wow.  Never knew that crochet was quicker.  I think I'll give it a shot.  Thanks!

  • So cute, I once gave a blanket with the hook attached and finished the border while she finished the gifts.  It was family and in all fairness, she was having twins so I had done two.
