Couples Shower - Menu Ideas?

We're throwing a very informal couples shower this Friday for my husband's best friend and his fianc?.

We need ideas of a menu or at least a menu theme!

There will be about 16 people there and one thing we have to keep in mind is that it's on a Friday evening so the prep time can't be forever long since we have to work on Friday.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Couples Shower - Menu Ideas?

  • Have it catered.

As far as menu, what types of things do the guests of honor like?  Why not ask them?

  • Our couples shower was Mexican.  It'd be cheap and easy for you to have catered on short notice and margaritas are super popular.

  • I agree with PP.  Especially since you don't have all day to be in the kitchen.  Order party-size take out platters from a local restaurant and pick it up on your way home from work.

The night before, set up your warmers and serving ware so you just have to drop everything in and keep the food warm.

    GL!

  • If you don't want to do catering.  Set up everything the night before: tableware, drink area, chill your beverages now.

Do a big tossed salad and a nice home made dressing

Crock of meatballs, hot roast beef, pulled pork, sausage and peppers, sausage and kraut, chili-- whatever your group likes. Put these on in the morning on warm and they should all be done when you get home.

    rolls, condiments

    cake or cupcakes

fruit salad, chips and salsa, shrimp dip...or whatever you want.

It's not a crowd so you don't have to have 12 dishes. Keep it simple...don't forget they all worked all week too...they are not going to hang out for hours and hours.

    Ick!

Having worked in food safety/restaurant inspections before, that is incredibly nasty.  Nevermind the bacteria load - who wants to eat meat that has been sitting in a warming tray for 8+ hours?

If I knew that this was how my host prepared the food for the evening, I'd nibble on some chips, leave early and hit up a drive-thru on the way home.

Have you never used a crock pot? Crock pots take all day to cook your food. If the item she puts in in the morning is raw it will be done when she gets home from work.  I assume that she is smart enough to not warm cooked food all day.

And having worked in hospitality myself, you are naieve if you think that food does not sit in unsianitary conditions all the time.  And if drive thru is your preferred restaurant of choice....well we can spend all day discussing sanitation there.

If OP has lots and lots of crockpots sitting around that are capable of getting hot enough to cook, that's different.  But throwing food in chaffing dishes over sternos and expecting it to cook that way?  Totally gross and unsanitary.

Yeah.....I used to be an inspector, I'm very aware that food is often handled in an unsanitary manner.  Doesn't mean that I'll advocate doing it myself.

And having been an inspector, I'll let you in on a little secret - fast foods are typically some of the better run food operations there are.  Everything in the kitchen is dumbed down and automated.  They puposely make it so simple that a brain dead high schooler can do it.  You almost have to try to screw it up.

  • we had hot wings, chicken salad sandwiches, chips, delli meat tray for sandwiches, fruit and veggie tray, & potato salad at ours
  • What about salad, garlic knots (pre-make and re-heat or buy and heat), baked ziti or lasagne, eggplant parm ), and meatballs - that way everything can be made ahead.  The garlic knots, ziti and eggplant can all go in the oven together, and the meatballs can reheat in a pot of sauce on the stove top.  If you like to bake, make a cake or cupcakes.  A canoli cream cake would fit with the theme.  If not, get a few types of italian pastries and cookies from a bakery.

  • I recently hosted a "stock the bar shower". And our guests of honor really like bar food. So we did: Wings (picked up), Fried Pickles (picked up), Big Salad, Chips & queso, Fruit tray, & LOTS of Alcohol (sangria, margarita, white wine, 3 mini kegs, and then a case of bud light).  We also did 3 different desserts. Our friends were eating and drinking all night. It was wonderful.

I also recently hosted an engagement party & we had lots of yummy salads (brocolli slaw, potato salad, a spinach & strawberry cold salad) & then while the girls where inside drinking wine & having wedding talk ... the boys were outside grilling burgers. Then we had a large table set up outside (bright colored table cloth & lantern centerpieces) & then a drink station (with beer, wine, and pink lemonade)
