Would lilacs be good foundation plants?
We're in zone 7 and the front bed in our home has lots of sun. If lilacs would be good, what kind would you suggest? Thanks!
Re: Would lilacs be good foundation plants?
They're deciduous like pp mentioned and you generally want to choose an evergreen. I'm not familiar with them because they're generally not grown in the south, but I believe lilacs also get fairly tall. You want to choose something that you won't have to whack on every year, so if you have windows 4 ft off the ground, choose something that doesn't exceed 4 ft.
Indian hawthorn likes sun and stays petite.

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
IMO, I think lilacs are stunning when in bloom and then kind of ugly the rest of the year.
I agree you'd probably want an evergreen or at least something with more winter interest for the front.
Lilacs can easily be 8-10 feet tall within a few years. I wouldn't suggest them for the front of a house. Against a garage or fence, yes.
