AW: Got the wood for my SFG boxes

Now I just need to cut them and put them together.  Woot!  I get to use power tools.  Smile

Too bad that is only the first step towards getting them all set up.  But at least it is a step in the right direction.

  • Can I ask what type of wood you are using.

  • I think I read you're supposed to use untreated cedar if you're using them for veggies. I guess that's to prevent chemicals from getting into the stuff you're going to be eating.
  • I purchased regular untreated kiln dried wood from Menards (since it is on sale cheaper than at HD or Lowes right now).  Both 2"x4"x8' and 2"x6"x8' sizes.

I plan on using linseed oil to treat the exterior of the boxes leaving the interior unfinished/unsealed.  Per my SFG book, linseed oil is OK to use on the exterior of the wood.

The untreated cedar was quite a bit more expensive so I decided not to use it.

it doesn't need to be cedar, it just needs to be untreated.  Cedar will last longer, but that comes at a price.

  • i used untreated cedar for mine and it was pricey... each box was probably close to $40 before I filled it with soil

This is exactly why I decided to use the regular kiln dried wood.  For my 4'x4' boxes (which will be 10" high), the cost of the wood was just over $6 per box.

The cost breakdown looks like this.
For the sides, with each board cut in half:
    1-2"x6"x8 piece for $3.12
    1-2"x4"x8" piece for $1.98
For the corners, with each board cut into 2 foot lengths:
    1-2"x2"x8' piece for $1.43.

Even with the cost of the linseed oil (about $8 for a quart) and the 3" decking screws ($30 for a 5 lb. box which is way more than enough for my boxes), the cost will still be well under $10 per box before soil.
