Smmmooooothies!

Are you a fan?

Do you make your own smoothie?

Is it possible to make a smoothie w/o yogurt (I'm not a fan - but can you even taste it?)  I may attempt to make these in the morning for hubs and I. He keeps buying fruit, but not eating it...so it goes bad.

Any recipes?

Re: Smmmooooothies!

  • I freaking love smoothies and even have a smoothie maker, but the few times I've tried they've tasted assy.

  • Now I want one!  Do they use yogurt at places like Jamba Juice?  I know they use ice, juice, and fruit.  What about adding ice cream or a low fat yougurt ice cream?
  • What have you put in them?

    I just saw a one calling for - http://www.skinnytaste.com/

    Strawberry Kiwi Smoothie

    • strawberry fiber one yogurt
    • 5-6 strawberries
    • 1 kiwi, peeled
    • 1 cup ice

Blend all ingredients together and serve

And I'm wondering if you can taste the yogurt.  It may be a texture thing, but I hate yogurt. yuck.

What's the difference between a smoothie maker, and a blender?

  • I think my error was using plain yogurt and not vanilla or another flavor. Gross.

  • I make smoothies often... My standard recipe (I vary the fruit and juice based on what we have on hand)

    6-8 frozen strawberries

    1/2 cup milk

    1/2 cup orange juice

1/4 cup low fat vanilla yogurt

    1 scoop vanilla protein powder

    1 banana

Makes enough for 2 large smoothies (we drink them in place of breakfast).

If you add the protien powder make sure you blend the milk, juice and powder first to dissolve it.  Then add the remaining ingredients.  I've made them without yogurt when I run out, not quite as creamy and you need to up the milk a touch but it still works.  If you use fresh fruit, add ice cubes.

  • I usually just use frozen fruit and orange juice...no yogurt. If I use fresh fruit, I add ice too. I make smoothies fairly often with my blender and use all kinds of fruit mixtures.

  • I have one that I do in the mornings sometimes. It's really easy, and fits into most diets. Many of the smoothies with citrus fruits and/or juice are high in sugar, so if that's a concern for you try this:

    1 cup of milk

1 1/2 cup of frozen berries (I usually do 1 cup strawberry, 1/2 cup blueberry)

1 scoop of why protein, I usually use vanilla flavored.

That's it! The frozen berries really do a great job of thickening it up. Actually, I've had this for dessert too because it tastes like ice cream.

  • I LOVE smoothies!

I'll usually throw in half a banana, a scoop of plain nonfat yogurt, a handfull of frozen strawberries & blueberries, a few ice cubes, then add a little OJ (just enough to get it going in the blender).

Occasionally I'll add in a little wheat germ for protein, but DH is grossed out by the texture of it...

  • I love smoothies, but more often I make protein shakes. I usually do: Lo-Fat Chocolate Milk, bananas, ice, vanilla protein powder and sugar-free chocolate syrup. I whip it up until it gets almost airy. Yummm.
  • Does anyone else not like smoothies?  I hate melted ice cream, and smoothies just remind me of that.  Sad

Funny b/c I hate melted ice cream too.  I constantly mix the smoothie so it doesn't seem watery.

  • I mix frozen mixed berries from Trader Joe's plus pomegranate juice.  Love!

If I want it sweeter, sometimes I will add a banana, but I generally hate bananas in smoothies.
