The Poor State of NC (tax related)

just for giggles, i went to check the status of our state refund, filed in early march.  this is the response i got:

Your tax return has been received and your refund will be processed as quickly as possible. However, we cannot provide specific estimates on when individuals will receive their refunds. Everyone who is due a refund will receive a refund. We update refund information by 6 p.m. daily. Your refund information will remain the same throughout the day. Please wait at least 24 hours before inquiring again.

AKA "The State is poor and we're waiting on those who owe so we can pay out."

Re: The Poor State of NC (tax related)

  • Have they said anything about paying interest if the refunds are super delayed? I doubt they will, but how is it fair we have to pay penalties and interest if we file/pay past 4/15, but they can hold onto our money for a long time? I think we filed in mid-March last year and did not get our refund until May or June, I am sure it will be at least July this year since we just filed last week.
  • i'm almost 100% sure that they have to if they're more than x number of days past your filing date.  i want to say that "x" is 90, but i haven't looked it up.  i'm not all that concerned considering our refund is $41 Smile

i do know that interest is taxable, we got stuck paying taxes on the interest the feds paid us when they held our federal refund for 7 months!

That is incredibly unbelievable Charch! I cannot believe you got taxed on the interest.  I remember what a mess you had to deal with and then to have to pay taxes on top of it, wow!!

  • I think I heard they have to be paid out by the end of May to not pay interest but don't quote me on that... we are waiting on ours too charch and filed around the same time... maybe they will have an influx of funds this week! It sure would be nice if I could wait to pay them until I had the "extra" money!
  • Yes, you have to receive your refund by the end of May (not sure of the exact date, we did a news story on it but I don't have access to our scripts at home) or you will get 5% interest on it.

I think the state said most refunds should be going out by May 5th.

Or hell, maybe I'm just thinking of Cinco de Mayo.vStick out tongue

  • We got that message.  It 6 or 7 weeks for us to get ours.  We filed the first week of Feb and just got our refund last week.

That was pretty similar to our timeline. We just got ours in the last couple weeks... but it was only $12 so I wasn't too worried about it!

  • Jumping over from the baby board...

We filed in late February and I'm getting this message "Your 2009 tax return has not been processed." Does that mean they didn't receive it? We're getting a lot back from state and I would love to have that cash!

Gah! I'm so glad you asked. I did get a confirmation that it was accepted. BUT my federal return was rejected (I made a typo on DH's W2) and that automatically rejects your state return. I NEVER got a notification about this, I thought my return went through 2 months ago. Angry

But thanks for posting, otherwise I would have had the IRS after me! =)

Well, what's the point of the website then? I had been meaning to go check ours but always forgot to do it when the information was readily accessible. Now I'm not going to bother.
