Behold, ASPARAGUS!

image

The first of the year!  I'm hoping it will be ready to harvest this weekend for my first garden snack of the year.

I'm ready for the harvests to begin!

Re: Behold, ASPARAGUS!

  • How many years have you had your asparagus? I'm on my 2nd year and I'm getting quite a bit, but I haven't harvested any yet. I'm just letting it go to fern because I thought you aren't supposed to harvest the first couple  years.

It was established the summer we moved in, so I'm not sure how long it has been here. It was already ferning when we moved in (there were 6' weeds in the garden, no joke.)  I didn't know what it was, so it got left alone that year, I assume and had been there for a year before that.  The next year we picked some for a week or two and then let it fern.  Last year I didn't pick too many.  This year I'll harvest a little more.

  • Very cool!  DH loves the stuff so I am going to plant a few next year so he will be able to get some right from the garden in a couple of years.
  • This is a good reminder to go hunting for the wild asparagus along the bike path.  Smile
