RP- Which is greener- plastic wrap or aluminum foil?

This was posted on D&R and I thought some of you might find it interesting.

Re: RP- Which is greener- plastic wrap or aluminum foil?

  • I think this depends on a lot of things...

    Will you recycling it?
How efficient is your cities recycling program?
    Will you reuse it?
How thick is said foil or cling wrap?
Was it made from recycled materials?

The bottom line is that disposable products aren't green.
We have the same rolls of both we had at the start of the year. We use tupperware or baking paper (recycled and compostable) instead.

  • I'm trying to think of an application where I would have a choice between plastic wrap or aluminum foil, but couldn't use something reusable instead...

(The main place I still use aluminum foil is camping cooking, and the main place I still use plastic wrap is machine embroidery... don't ask.)

  • I never used aluminum foil growing up. We used plastic wrap, and rarely. My DH uses aluminum foil for EVERYTHING. He uses it in stead of parchment paper, to save pizza in the fridge, EVERYTHING. However, he saves it too and reuses it. Even the foil off of his burrito he is careful to unfold in one long piece to reuse.

  • I have never bought plastic wrap personally, I'm sure my parents have.  A roll of Reynolds recycled aluminum foil lasts us a month or more, I can't even think off the top of my head what we use it for.  We use Pyrex bowls w/ lids to hold all our leftovers.  I'm with PP, disposable products aren't green.  Why do people need to cover something with plastic wrap? Why do baking sheets need to be covered with aluminum foil?  We just grease our baking sheets.

I live just fine without plastic wrap. We didn't really use it growing up, so its just normal for me not to use it. I don't even think about it.

I just grease them too. My DH is just a goon sometimes, and I am winning the bigger battles quicker than the little battles, so I am taking it as I can get it.

  • i agree, using reusable containers is definitely the greenest.   we've had the same 1 box of plastic wrap since we moved into our condo 3 years ago.  we rarely use it.  we use foil a little more often, (i don't think DH will ever totally give up foil) and i try to reuse/recycle it whenever possible.

  • I rarely use either one, but I have to say that I do have a hard time giving up my parchment paper - I love it.  I do buy the recycled, unbleached kind, so I suppose it's no too bad?
