Daylilies

I'm in Zone 7 and looking for color in full sun with a long bloom time.  I love daylilies and wonder if you guys think this is a good bet.

They bloom all summer, right?

Any negatives I should know about daylilies?

TIA!

One beautiful toddler and one beautiful baby.

Re: Daylilies

  • From what I remember, daylilies do not bloom all summer. They bloom for a week or so, then they're done.

  • Dr Loretta - thanks for the tip.

I just opened your blog - - - congrats on your beautiful daughter!  Where in the Poconos are you?  I'm in NJ and used to go to honesdale/hwley area in my youth!  is that considered poconos?

  • Happy Returns Daylillies will bloom all summer.  I have a million of them in my yard.
  • The flower lasts for a day and then it fades. There are reblooming varieties of daylilies. Most common - Happy Returns and Stella d' Oro.

There is a daylily grower in TN - Oakes Daylilies - that has several vareities. They have a section of rebloomers as well. The prices are fairly reasonable. You can get 3 Happy Returns for $21.

  • Thanks so much ladies.  I will definitely get the Happy REturns or Stella D'Oro!

Verbena "Homestead Purple" and Lantana "Miss Huff" will grow very fast and bloom from spring to frost, are hardy to zone 7, have no disease/insect problems to speak of (plus deer hate them), and are poor soil and drought tolerant.

  • Can I give a big Thumbs up to the Lantana recommendation! LOL I planted those last year and LOVED them. No need to deadhead spent blooms, grew wonderfully, and the butterflies loved them. Also, no disease issues at.all.

  • Ok, I'm adding Lantana "Miss Huff" to my list!  Thanks again!!!
