Derky & other cyclists and/or triathletes

So I've been chewing on the idea of trying a sprint triathlon for awhile, and it turns out there is one close to where I live at the end of June. I'm thinking I might go for it, and I'm wondering if you had any training tips or advice for a newbie like me. Anything you've got would be much appreciated.

When it comes to training for long road races I've always been a Hal Higdon follower, and right now my plan is to use his 8-week training program for a sprint tri as a guide. But I really have no basis for comparison for this type of race. Thoughts?

I also have about a zillion questions when it comes to the logistics on race day, but I figure I probably shouldn't get ahead of myself and focus on the training part of it right now. TIA!

Re: Derky & other cyclists and/or triathletes

  • Hey Murph!  Sorry for my late response--I'm in my "hell week" for work.

Congratulations!  That sounds like such an exciting new challenge for you!  Unfortunately, I myself, have never done a Tri!  When training for my marathon we followed Higdon's program, so I'd probably find his training tips/plans as reliable for a Tri as well.

I know a few of my friends have done sprint tris, to sort of "try out a Tri" because you can still do a sprint and not have to invest too much money in a great bike and stuff.  See how you like it, and then decide if they are something you really enjoy and want to invest in.   Good luck--if you want any just basic cycling advice I might be able to give you a few pointers!!

  • Derky, I may very well take you up on your offer for advice when it comes to cycling these next couple of months. I've got an old racing bike that belonged to my husband, but cycling is where I've got the least experience and a lot to learn. Thanks for the words of encouragement!

  • DH has been training for several triathlons this spring and summer. He's read the Triathlon Training Bible. He started out as a cyclist. He says swimming is most people's weak area. He really enjoyed Total Immersion Swimming (he preferred the DVD to the book). They have a website where you can get info. DH also tends to be very scientific and technique oriented. GL!

  • Thanks for the information, Bobs. I will check out the Triathlon Training Bible and look into total immersion swimming. GL to Bob this spring and summer!
