Cost of living in KC?? from a potential new KC girl

we're currently living in Nor Cal- where the cost of living here is AWFUL.

but the Husband has been contacted by a group in KC that seems interested and interesting for that matter.  but we don't know much about the area.

How much do we honestly have to make in order to keep me as a stay at home mom to a 3 year old and have a house?

any info would be great.

Thanks,

G

  • There are many different areas of KC - some more affordable than others.

It really depends on where you are going to be moving, how much your H makes, etc.

KC is a great place to live!

This.  But I think a large part of it is also what your standard of living is.  How often you like to go out, activities you and your family like to participate in and the likes will also determine what you have to have to live on.  I know people that make $80k+ a year and the wife is a stay at home mom that struggle, but my brother makes $40k a year and his wife stays at home and they do just fine.  It really all depends on the family and what their current financial situation and standard of living are.

  • It all depends on where you live. I am from KC but DH is from SO Cal and we lived there many years. The cost of living is like night and day. Realistically you can be a stay at home mom w $60K. Like I said, it all depends on where you live, Overland Park, Lee's Summit, Olathe, KC.....the housing costs vary and you'll find that some of the southerrn KS suburbs cost more than the MO side ones.....Good luck!

  • we live in Lee's Summit (just south of KC) and just bought a nice 4 bedroom house for $135,000.  Lee's Summit is a pretty nice area compared to some of the other ones, so you could find the same house for cheeper depending on what area you are in.  The rest of your budget is basically up to you and what you like to do.  If you're renting, you can find anything from $400+/month depending on how big/what area you are in.
  • thanks so much for the numbers ladies.

but unfortunatly they aren't offering us the job, or enough money for that matter. drats.

oh well. would have been fun.
