San Diego

That's german for a whale's vagina! HAHA Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Ok...the real reason I posted this is because DH and I want to go to San Diego for Memorial Day weekend for our 2 year anniversary (a week late lol).

I have a coupon for a Bed & Breakfast but they are expensive and I don't have enough for 2 nights. Also, I'm not sure if they will let me use it on a holiday weekend.

SO....do you girls have any rec's for places to stay that aren't crazy expensive?? I've never been there so I know nothing about San Diego. Also, anything cool/fun to do or must see's would be great. I want to hit up the Zoo or Aquarium while we're there.

Thanks for your help.

  • Hmm I dont know price wise (I always stay with group rates), but I love the Paradise Point Hotel (it's BEAUTIFUL!) and the San Diego Hilton Resort!

  • We stayed at the Best Western Seven Seas which is a in Mission Valley. We stayed here because it was cheap but very nice and public transportation was near. I don't think you are looking for this type of hotel since it's your anniversary but if you are going for the cheap-not-going-to-be-in-your-hotel-long like us, I suggest it.

As for things to do, Gas Lamp District is great, If you like baseball I would check to see if the Padres are there and catch a game. USS Midway is really awesome, I loved it. We didn't do Sea World or the Zoo but I've heard great things about them.

  • I lived there for almost a year and have stayed at tons of different hotels there, and DH lived there for like 25 years...so if you have any questions let me know! What you want to do definitely depends on where you want to stay. If it's going to be an anniversary trip, I wouldn't recommend staying in mission beach. It gets pretty crazy at night and is sooooo not quiet at all. Unless that's what you're looking for. Parking is a *** anywhere down there though.

We normally stay in Chula Vista because that's where most of our family is, and we found a very nice hotel that's affordable.

I'd definitely checkout the Midway if it's open, the san diego zoo is awesome! Sea World is totally expensive but I love it. Downtown (gaslamp) has awesome restaurants and clubs/bars. Depending on where you're staying, you can take the trolley downtown so you can both have a good time and have drinks and not worry about having to drive. Really, let me know if you have any questions!

  • My husband and I love San Diego, its a great place!  We usually stay downtown and have gotten great deals through priceline.  We loved the W Hotel and walked to Little Italy for dinner from there.  We also really liked the trolley tour we took our first time there and definitely go to Coronado Island. Balboa Park has tons of museums and the zoo.  You could also do a cruise around the harbor.
  • Oh, and Sea World does fireworks every Saturday night in the summer, so they should be doing it when you go! It's fun to go to the beach and watch those.

I've been reading on all the hotel reviews that parking is horrible! UGH! We want to just relax, go out to eat, maybe go site seeing, walk around, just enjoy what San Diego has to offer. I know nothing about it other than everyone loves it.

We don't want to spend a ton on a hotel but then again, we don't want a shittty one either. Is the Chula Vista in an area where we can walk to some places? And yes, we'd both like to drink (of course depending on if I get pregnant or not) so we'd rather not drive esp. if parking is a biitch.

What are the best areas to stay?

Thanks so much, Shannon. I'm really hoping we can get this figured out because I've been DYING to go there!!!

We stay at a comfort inn (but it's a really nice one) that's actually right next to a trolley station. it's not really near anything exciting though. it's more south, closer to mexico and the bay, not really the beach. parking downtown is totally lame too, and a lot of hotels out there you have to pay to park. let me talk to dh and we will make some suggestions on where you guys can stay where you can be near a trolley station and near the beach. i have a few places in mind but i'll talk to him first :)

Great...thanks so much! I def. want to go to the beach!!! You're awesome! Wink

  • We go at least once a year and normally stay in Hotel Circle.  The rooms are cheap and decent (we blocked rooms at the Comfort Inn and Suites for our wedding and all of our guests loved it).  You won't really be able to walk anywhere, but it's a cheap cab ride to Gaslamp if you want to drink.

I definately recommend either the Wild Animal Park or the Zoo.  If you do the Zoo plan a whole day there and spend half of it walking arounf Balboa Park and in all of the little museums.  There's a fun bar in Mission Beach called Canes, from the upstairs glass-walled deck you have the most amazing view of the sunset.  It's right behind Belmont Park (a boardwalk-style amusement park with cheesy rides and games), with free admission, so it's fun to kind of wander through there.  I haven't been to Sea World, so I can't help you there.

Last year we rented bikes on Orange Ave. on Coronado and had an absolute blast riding around the island.  Definately check out the Hotel Del, it's gorgeous!

  • Alright, no time for me to read through every post - so sorry if this is a repeat...BUT...you absolutely should make a day trip to Coronado Island.  It is my fave part of going to San Diego.  It'll prob be crazy expensive to stay on the actual island though.

Yeah this is what I was going to recommend also, and the trolley is actually really close to hotel circle. You might even be able to get a shuttle from the hotel to the station...but we took a cab downtown once from hotel circle and it wasn't that expensive. Hotel circle can be a PITA to get in and out of if you're not familiar with the area but it's centrally located. I think I've stayed at that comfort inn, and the kings inn has also treated us well over there
