How about a discussion?

http://www.cnn.com/2010/OPINION/04/15/kaku.space.obama/index.html?iref=allsearch

The President has decided to can all shuttle missions this year. the focus of NASA will now be on getting an astronaut to Mars and more research. This means about 9,000 will get pink slips. I think that's it in a nut shell.

What do you think? Do you think we need to continue researching the moon? What do you think of 9,000 federal employees getting canned? Is it worth looking at Mars when there is (supposidly) more to be looked at on the moon?

Re: How about a discussion?

  • Honestly, this disappoints me. I'm a science geek, and we haven't done anything spatially significant since the Apollo days, in my opinion.

I just hope other countries don't follow this. I couldn't care less who (as in, what country) gets to Mars first, but I just want someone to get there in my lifetime! :(

  • With the exception of the space station, you are right there hasn't been anything monumnetal happen. On one hand I'm glad that they are shutting it down or at least suspending it, but on the other that many people losing their jobs in this economy is equally as frivolous. Especially since they are not cutting funding. If they were reappropriating the 16Billion a year somewhere else, I would have a different opinion.

I didn't know funding wasn't cut. That makes it even more WTF

  • From what I read and what I heard on NPR, funding wasn't cut. It's going to be used for more research, so mostily mechanics and shuttle personnel will be let go.

Let's see how many openings there are for space shuttle mechanics. How do you start that interview? Actually now that I "say" it, I wonder if other countries trying to get to the moon will try and snipe them?
