What would you wear??

Ok, the last time I saw a musical it was UBER fancy.. Like nutso in NYC.

I am going to see Wicked next week while i am in Upstate NY. I was going to go with black pants and a cute shirt / shoes but now I am wondering if this is something I need to be more dressy for. It is the evening show so I know it would be a bit more dressy then the afternoon one, but I am not sure what I should do.

Also, it's still pretty cold there at night. Their daytime high is around 55. Is it OK to pack my wool jacket to bring? Or are those "out for the season". Anyone know? I don't really want to buy anything as I wont wear it again and dont really have the money to spend on something i'll wear once in a great while.

Re: What would you wear??

  • I would think black pants, a dressy shirt & some cute shoes would be okay.  Though, take this with a grain of salt, as I come from Seattle, where people wear jeans to shows.  So wrong.

    I also think this.

That being said, when Wicked was here at Gammage - I wore a dress to a late afternoon show.  I like to dress up.

  • I agree with the PP and sidenote, totally Jealous that you get to see it. I am trying to get DH to take me to San Fran to see it.

LoL! Yeah, I was DYING to see it in Boston when we lived there, but the tickets were NUTS!!  So my friend in NY got us tickets. They are seats in the very last row, but I don't even care. I am just so excited to be going. I should probably go get my glasses first though haha!

If you have a small pair of binoculars, take 'em!  Even when you have seats 10 rows back from the stage, it's still kinda neat to check out the details of the actors and scenery through the binocs.

As for how to dress, I think you should be fine, but then again I've never been to NY, so I could just be speaking out of my ass.  ;)  Usually when I go to Gammage I wear a dress and nice sandals (or boots, depending on the season), but maybe that's because I don't get a chance to dress up very often!  Last Sunday I went to see Jesus Christ Superstar and there was a guy probably in his mid-20s in a pair of jeans and a grey hoodie (A hoodie?  Really, dude?).  Actually, even better than that was the late-teen/early-20s girl in the 4th row of Phantom that walked in wearing jeans, a long-sleeved t-shirt, and toting a Big Gulp!  Maybe I'm sounding like a snob, but I always thought of theater productions as something you at least make an effort to look nice for.

Anyway, I hear Wicked is fabulous--I hope you have fun!

Exactly!  That's totally normal for Seattle shows.  It's just not right!

  • I think your idea is fine Jess!  It's a great show!  I really really liked it--imo-wayyyyy better than the book-way!
  • When I saw it in San Francisco in January, lots of people were dressed business casual (dresses, dress pants, heels, ect.) Have fun!! It was AMAZING :)
    Anniversary
  • Ohhh, fun!! I think black dress pants and a nice top is perfectly fine. I personally would probably wear a black dress or something, but that's because I like to dress up and don't get to very often. And I think the wool jacket is fine, too! If it's still cold there, then I'd say it's still in season. That's one thing I like about AZ -- the fact that white gets to be in season so much earlier here since it warms up faster. I think that sort of thing totally depends on the climate you're in.

     Have a fabulous trip!

  • Thanks girls. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to be too extremely underdressed if I kept it simple..
