new: recommend a ground cover plant

Hi! i'm new to this board. I just moved to my first house in February and am super excited to start gardening. I have an area of dirt alongside my driveway (between driveway and house), probably about 6 feet long and 1 foot deep that i think i'd like to fill with some sort of ground cover plant, preferably something flowering. I am in upstate NY, which I believe is zone 6.

Any plant recommendations??

Re: new: recommend a ground cover plant

  • Do you want this to be evergreen or are you OK with having a big bare patch in winter?

I would recommend liriope.  It gets purple flowers in fall (when lots of things are kind of boring out) and it doesn't die back in the winter.  Plus, it's cheap & tough to kill.  And, it doesn't pretty good in shade/sun (you don't mention what you have).

IMO, a lot of the really stunning flowering ground covers are only pretty when they are blooming and the ready of the year they aren't that attractive.  It sounds like this might be in your front yard, so you'll want to consider how something will look all year round.

  • I'd be good either way - evergreen or not. In the winter it doesn't really matter if it is attractive bc the ground will likely be covered with snow most of the time (we get major lake effect snow). The spot is on the west side of my house, so it will get some afternoon sun, and is not really very visible from the street.

I'll check out liriope... thanks for the suggestion!

  • I really like phlox, the small creeping kind would be nice as ground cover
  • Vinca Minor or Major.  We can only grow Minor here but it has beautiful shiny green leaves with little purple flowers.

Ajuga.  They make specialty kinds with all sorts of different colored foliage/flower combos.  Can be considered a bit of a weed because it's tough to kill but would be able to handle some foot traffic.

Irish Moss.  Not actually a moss.  It has tiny white flowers in the summer.
