DH thinks our water tastes gross, and he does environmental chem stuff for work so he gets really creeped out thinking about all the nasties in the water supply.
So, he realllllly wants to get a Brita pitcher. I am fine with tap water but I can understand where he is coming from. I don't really like that the pitcher is plastic though. Whether it has BPA or not there are all kinds of other nasties. we use glass and metal for all our other food storage, why would we store our water in plastic?
A tap filter is out, it won't work with our faucet. I guess I could pour the water from the Brita pitcher into a metal pitcher but honjestly with 2 small kids I am not looking for that much extra work.
Any thoughts? WWYD?
Re: BPA-fee spin/off: Brita pitchers?
We installed an under the sink filter (not a faucet filter) that's long-life and it comes out of a separate faucet (small one - we put it in the hole where the soap dispenser would go in our sink). Would that work for you? We got it at Home Depot. I think it was maybe around $100.
I would recommend the reverse osmosis one. Our friends who are way in to this, and are doctor scientists (sound a little like your DH) swear by this. They have lots of different units and like PP said, it has a separate faucet just for drinking/cooking water.
ETA Amazon has themhttp://www.amazon.com/Reverse-Osmosis-Water-Filter-System/dp/B001GSVKN6 but if you google... lots of different prices etc.
I'd also recommend a filtration system. From what we were told and what we read, the Brita filters don't really remove all that much from your water - especially if it's a taste issue - with taste issues, you're better off with a reverse osmosis system.
I have a Pur filter and like that the water is filtered and really cold in the fridge so it's convenient. Plus, ours has the flavor shot thing which DH liked. I'm pretty sure I remember reading that they are BPA free, I could be wrong though.
Growing up in Louisana we had an under the sink filtration system and the water came out of a small spout.
Here in Stockholm I am lucky as we have some fo the best quality and best tasting tap water in the world. I will miss it if we move back to the States one day.
