? about mulched beds

we mulched a few beds last summer/fall but now find it really hard to add more compost and dig holes for new plants w/o getting pieces of mulch down in the soil.  Should we be raking up the mulch every spring when we put in new plants or is there another way to get around the mulch.  I want to amend our soil but don't want pieces of mulch throughout.

Re: ? about mulched beds

  • I was not aware that mulch in the soil amendment was an issue. We don't rake up the mulch every time we plant. I just move it out of the way, dig a hole, fill it in, and cover with mulch again.

  • It's totally fine to have mulch in your soil, assuming you're talking about something like wood and not rubber.
  • okay good to know!  I just don't want to eff up my $50 hydrangea bush, lol!
