Need area advice for Columbus

Hi, I'm moving from NJ to Columbus in June and I'm still trying to find the best location to rent an apartment.  If there are any Columbus Nesties who could help, I would greatly appreciate it.

Re: Need area advice for Columbus

  • Well, both our jobs have multiple locations all over Columbus, so it's not much of an issue. We really need to be close to OSU and the Community College...but I was told that most of the affordable areas very close to OSU are bad areas. I'm looking into Sussex Square Apartments, but I'm not sure how shady that area is. We also have looked into a couple places near Whitehall/Bexley, but I get the feeling it's not quite safe there either. What are would you recommend near campus that's fairly safe? Thanks
  • Dublin is a nice area and it close to 315, which you would use to get to OSU.
  • Thanks! I'll check that area out.
  • Do you have a range in mind for rent payments? There are some nice privately-owned condos/apartments that are affordable near campus. A really great site to get you started looking in and around the downtown area is  http://www.metro-rentals.com  - there are even pictures of a lot of the units.

I live in a condo near campus in Harrison West...our rent is a bit high, but I know there are more affordable places, but I really love the area.

    Happy hunting! :)

  • Thanks, I will explore that link. I am hoping to find a smallish 2 bedroom unit, for under $600 a month. That's the goal anyway.
  • I'm also from NJ and moved to Columbus last year. =)

We live in the Short North area...we wanted to live in a pedestrian area where I wouldn't need to drive much. Unfortunately, there aren't many of those types of neighborhoods in Columbus.

  • Check out Victorian Village...I lived in a 2 bedroom townhome for about 785 (at the time) and the same complex also had 2 bedroom apartments. Grandview also has some affordable apartments!!

  • If you're still looking we live in the Upper Arlington area.  Very safe, tons of families and only 10 min to OSU.  We have a 2 br townhome with a $775 a month rent.  Check out Wallace F. Ackley's properties.  :-)

  • Grandview, Upper Arlington and Northwest Columbus (Dublin, Worthington) are all good choices and really close to OSU and CSCC. I would stay away from Whitehall if I were you, it used to be a really nice area, but stuff goes down over there all of the time now. I lived in the Sawmill/I-61 area for about 2 yrs and loved it. I grew up in Worthington and would go back in a heartbeat. I just love the northwest area, you are away from the city but still close enough to the highway and stuff to get where you need to go.
