Anyone have experience with moles?

My beautiful onion patch just got a mole... I am crushed. I need some advice (and a hug!).

Re: Anyone have experience with moles?

  • Oh no!  That sucks, I would be so mad if a mole got into our onion patch.    Left Hug Hugs Right Hug  Growing up, my mom always dropped a chunk of laxative (the kind that looks like chocolate) down their hole, and put a chunk in every bulb hole she planted.  I distinctly remember her telling me when I helped, "do.not.eat.this.  It is not chocolate." Seemed to work as far as I could tell.  www.gardeners.com also has a lot of products that deter, but don't kill them, like stakes that produce noise or vibrations to drive them away.

  • Thanks! The more I am reading, the more I wonder if I am over reacting. They don't seem to be so bad. So... I'll have to see. I like the idea of the vibrations. I don't want to kill them, just move them over to another area...

  • We sell quite a bit of Mole Max at our store. It's mostly castor oil.
  • We bought this stuff because a mole was tearing up our whole place... I can't remember what it was called, but it was mostly dried blood (!), and it was effective!

We got it at the hardware / garden store, it came in a gallon-sized plastic bottle.

Apparently, you can use "Blood Meal", which is also effective as a fertilizer, for discouraging moles...

I know they ate my mom's bulbs, so I imagine they're eating your onions too.  If we got them I would definetely force them to move ASAP.  I wouldn't kill them though.  There are lots of deterrents out there.
