~~MMP - About your Thuja~~

I'm planning on planting some of these in my backyard to act as a privacy screen. How much shade do these provide? While I want the privacy, I don't necessarily want a heavily shaded backyard. I'd still like to have enough sun for my gardening efforts. My yard isn't that deep, so my fear is that planting big trees (I know Thuja isn't necessarily a big tree), would create too much shade for my yard.

  • :::butting in:::

    If you want to see the effects of adding a privacy screen, you can put up tall bamboo stakes or a ladder that would be the mature height & watch the shadows it casts throughout the day.

  • I never thought about doing that! Good idea. Thanks!

  • Which ones? I have thuja emerald green (get 8-12 feet) and green giants (they get 20-50 ft tall).

    My emerald greens are very thin at the top and don't cast much shadow.  I think they mostly cast a shadow against the house, not the yard. The shadow on the ground is minimal.

    You can also keep them trimmed to the height you want to give privacy, but allow the sun to come in.

    My green giants are still quite small and can't tell about the shadow.  However, they are very conical.  Fat on the bottom, very thin at the top. I plan to keep them about 15-20 ft. tall.

    I also have 60 ft leylands and they don't cast much shadow (kind of cast a shadow on each other, and at most 5-8 feet into the yard depending on the sun's position. It could be b/c I have them in the north end of the yard.  I get too much shade from the trees that have a large canopy, like my oaks.

    Does that make sense?

    If you're looking for just 8-12 ft in height, go with emerald green.  You canalso stagger them instead of putting them in a straight line to get faster coverage and a more natural look.

  • MMP - The Emerald Green Thuja are what I'm interested in. I don't have a huge backyard, I just need something that will block the view of my neighbor's house and his nosy kids! LOL They like to knock on the windows and annoy me when I work in the yard. Plus, the neighbor irks me too. I don't want to carry on a conversation in my backyard. I'm out there for peace and quiet. I need privacy! LOL

    The Leylands and Green Giants would probably bee to tall. I think 10-15ft is what I'm looking for.

    You have pics of the trees in your bio right?

  • Yes, second picture down.  I have one on each corner of my garage. They only get about 3 feet wide.  They've grown some since that picture was taken.  I'll take a new picture when I get home from work today and post it here.
