Tomatoes & Peppers: How many per plant?
How many tomatoes (Roma) and Peppers (Green, Yellow and Red) do you think I can expect to harvest from each plant?
This is my first year doing a garden and I planted my seed packets and they are doing really well, but I just realized I have 23 Roma Tomato plants that have sprouted. I am going to trade/give some away but I am trying to decide how many I should keep.
Thanks for any help!
Re: Tomatoes & Peppers: How many per plant?
8-10 tomato plants should yield an amount sufficient for a family of 4 with enough for some neighbors. If you are thinking about making tomato sauces or canning, more plants wouldn't be bad.
Depending upon the variety of peppers, we get anywhere from one (bell) to 200 (small, thai variety). Our habaneros usually have 3-6 per plant per year.

It varies a lot depending on the season. A mild summer can totally dampen the number of tomatoes from a plant. A hotter summer with plenty of watering, can lead you to such a large harvest that you'll be giving them away.
I had a coworker that brought in bags and bags of tomatoes from only three plants. The next year, I planted three plants, and only got snacks from it.
This year, I'm practically going to farm out my side yard with tomato plants. I want a plethora!
