how much of childhood belongings are still at your parents?

i get so irritated at DH and his sisters. my IL's house is small and MIL is always unhappy with the lack of space. i try telling her that it'd be so much better if she got rid of the kids things in the spare bedrooms. i think its one of those things where that stuff has just sat there for so long, she kind of forgets about it. we're talking about highschool & college textbooks, baseball cards, trophies, stuffed animals, all sorts of framed high school pictures (seriously, why do they need to display prom pics still?!?), etc... it just bothers me because its clutter, looks messy and i don't understand why no one takes care of it.

i have a couple things at my parents, but its boxed up in the attic and out of the way.

  • i have a cedar chest that i built full of junk at my mom's. she is also "temporarily" housing a large cabinet that i built my senior year of HS. we're planning to get it before we move.

  • My room at my parents house is slowly starting to no longer "my room."  I guess in a way it alway will be, but my stuff is slowly clearing out. About each time I'm home, my mom has me go through something else to see if I really want it. Usually I'll toss it or bring it back with me.

This year for Christmas, mom told me that I would be receiving all of my Belkie Bears bc I'm not ready to part with them yet, but she's ready too.

  • Not much. Or at least that's what I think, but it seems like my parents are always bringing more with them everytime I see them. I don't know where it's all coming from. A lot of it is crap that my mom is all "Oh noooooo, don't get rid of THAT! You made/wore/played with that when you were xage, it's soooooo precious". So then I feel guilty and keep it.

I got a Belkie bear one year as a kid. Too funny!

I don't have anything left at my parents house - most everything came to Charlotte when they moved about 3+ years ago from our childhood home into a new house. I also chunked a LOT of crap like notes from high school. Not sure why I held on to those.

I have about eight of them. DH doesn't know that our house will soon be home to them. :)

  • i have like 1 box of stuff still at my mom's, in the attic - everything else she made me go through and keep or trash when she moved out of our childhood home ~4 years ago.

  • Nothing. My parents moved to a TINY century old farm house and dumped all my childhood stuff on me. I've tossed a lot of it but I have all my pics and yearbooks on a bookshelf in teh office (home office) a box of stuffed animals and a few items displayed here and there through the house. (Like my Windstone unicorns in my china cabinet, some highschool and college plaques in teh spare bedroom with some of my stuffed animals piled on my daybed.

  • My parents moved about 9 years ago and my brother and I were told that we could pick up our stuff, we could let Mom sell it a garage sale (and we'd get the $$) or it was tossed.

DH still has some stuff at his parents but they haven't moved. What they did make him take out of the house is now in boxes in our garage. One day I will "surprise" him with a purge of his old pillows and books.

  • well i'm the odd ball who still has tons of stuff at my moms and my childhood room still looks much like it did when i lived there. only now all my clothes are gone that's ab it.  i can't part with the stuff but don't have the storage for it here and my mom is in no hurry for me to do anything w/the stuff so it will just stay where it is until further notice.

  • I have some boxes of stuff in the attic at their house.  I have a few things in the closet of my bedroom (kinda) there, but I bring some every time I come back.  They moved to a new house within 2 months of me moving into my 1st apartment, so a lot of stuff came with me.  The bedroom set in "my room" at my parents house, belongs to my grandma.
