Best Farmers Markets

We moved to Chicago in the dreary days of January and am excited to see the sun start to shine and smell spring in the air... for me, that means that the start of Farmer's Markets can't be too far behind!

I grew up in rural Indiana, so I am a huge fan of fresh veggies!  Can any of you share where your favorite Farmer's Markets are located, and days/times if you've got them?  Although I'm located in Hyde Park, I'm up for traveling if the produce is worth it.  I know it's not very sustainable, but I've actually been known to drive up to 45 minutes at 5 a.m. on a Saturday in order to get the best sweet corn in the city (Indianapolis, where I'm from...)  Crazy, perhaps...  any info you share is appreciated!

Re: Best Farmers Markets

  • Hey fellow Indy-nestie! I moved here in November from Fishers and am also looking forward to the fun Chicago fmkts. I've "heard" there are really good ones in the loop (which comes as a surprise to me!). Last summer while visiting, I saw one in the streets near Gold Coast but can't recall where (somewhere near the red line Chicago stop) - it looked plentiful and was on a Sat a.m.

Cheers to a fresh summer produce!

  • The largest farmer's market in Chicago is the Green City Market.  A lot of  local chefs go there for produce.  It is housed indoors for the winter and will open again outdoors in Lincoln Park on May 1st.
