Traveling to Tucson - advice/suggestions?

Hi ladies,

I'm a Northern California nestie who will be traveling to Tucson soon and wanted some advice/suggestions. I know there's a Tucson board but it doesn't seem to get a lot of traffic, so I thought I'd try here...

DH and I will be flying into Tucson and spending about 3-4 days in and around there in late May/early June. We'll mostly be camping and enjoying the desert, but we'll have a rental car and will probably stay at a hotel the last night we're there. We're not planning on spending a ton of time in the city itself, but we'll be around and have a flexible schedule.

So I'm wondering if there are any amazing things to do, see, eat, etc. in Tucson or the nearby area that we just shouldn't miss while we're there? Thanks!

  • I was going to tell you not to go....until I saw you were from Cali and realized you wouldn't get my joke (I worked at ASU, tucson =UofA =nemesis).

But really I know there are some pretty cool things near there, look up Kartchner's caverns but that's all I know.

    Enjoy!

  • Here is the typical list of places to go in Tucson - Desert Botanical Gardens, Old Tucson, Pima Air & Space Museum, San Xavier Mission, Fourth Avenue, the Biosphere

As the last poster said, you can check out Kartchner Caverns near Benson (about 30 - 45 mins from Tucson) or go the other way and visit the Ostrich Ranch (near Pichaco Peak).

If you don't want to stay in the Tucson area, you can always visit Tombstone or Bisbee.

As far as food goes, you can check out Mi Nidito (4th Avenue & 29th Street) that's where President Clinton ate when he came to Tucson. I personally am not a fan of it, but it's quite popular.  We like to go to El Indio on 6th Avenue (6th and I-10). I would recommend a Sonoran Hotdog from El Guero Canelo or BK's (12th and Irvington area). Bison Witches on 4th Avenue has good sandwiches.

Hope you enjoy your visit. If I can think of more places, I'll add to the thread.

  • Thanks ladies, I appreciate it!
  • The Sonoran Desert Museum is pretty cool.  It's more of an outdoorsy, walk along the trails and see animals type of thing than it is an actual "museum."

  • I also 2nd the Sonoran Dessert Museum, and if looking for a quick bite, I'm a fan of Eegees.  It's a chain down there that does frozen dessert slushes along with sandwiches.
