anyone grow asparagus?

I'm in zone 4, and am thinking about growing it on the south side of my garage. There is a tree there, but it will get partial sun. Is that enough?

Re: anyone grow asparagus?

  • I haven't grown asparagus, but do be aware that it can take a few years to get a harvest worth eating.  We pull out our items after one season due to space and have opted not to plant asparagus for that reason.

  • I planted some last year and this year I have ferns but no asparagus yet. I think I'm in zone 4, could be wrong though! I live in Indiana.
  • Mine get full sun and do great, but I'm not sure what the technical requirements are.
  • Hi, I'm new to this message board (actually just discovered it tonight!) but was interested in responding to this post since I had looked into growing asparagus this year.  What I found out is that once you plant the asparagus root bulb, or whatever it is, it takes 3 years before you can harvest.  I also looked up pictures of what an asparagus plant looks like in the fall and those things can look kinda wild!  So I decided before I plant one I need to make sure it won't bother my neighbors :)

I'd love to have some asparagus one of these years since they are the first veggie to come up in the spring!

Oh, I also think they grow in sun/partial shade.

  • As long as it's on the south side, I would think you'd be ok.  As pp have mentioned, it takes a few years before you can harvest.  But it is sooo worth the wait.  We have a nice bed of asparagus (probably 5-6 yrs old) and there is nothing better than harvesting fresh asparagus from the garden and cooking it immediately.  Go for the improved varieties that are disease resistant.
  • We have some but it took at least 3 years before we got anything edible.  Ours is on the side of our house that gets morning sun and it seems to do well.
