If you make your own laundry detergent...

Can you share your recipe?

And... can you add anything to it (like essential oils) to give it a nice smell?

I want to give up my laundry detergent but I realllly like the smell of clean clothes washed in detergent so I'm trying to find a compromise.

Or... do you not use detergent at all?

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

Re: If you make your own laundry detergent...

  • I make my own and got the recipe from the ladies on here.  I'm going to try to remember it off the top of my head for you!

1 cup borax, 1 cup washing soda, 1 cup baking soda, and 1 bar of plain soap (I used Dr. Bs, some ppl use ivory).

You have to shave/grate the soap.  I did it by hand the first time but might try the food processor for my next go around as I've heard that works too.  You want the soap to be very fine.  Mix it all together and voila!  1 T for regular loads, 2 T for heavier loads.  I've heard you can't use this recipe if you cloth diaper...not sure if there is another one out there or not.

As far as essential oils go, I don't add any but I'm sure you can.  I love this recipe...our clothes come out so fresh!

  • I use same recipe as PP. ?No essential oils added to mine. ?The cloth diaper thing I *think* has to do with the soap and the "film" it can leave on cloth diapers but I don't know for sure.

I like using the dry mix vs the wet soap mix. ?I've DH's family hooked on the soap and nana makes HUGE batches and gives us all a large tub whenever she makes it. ?I haven't made soap since last year.?

  • Heres what I use. I don't do scented laundry (a scent that can transcend soap and rinsing--aka artificial scents--are a little scary to me) . But three idea for scenting laundry are

-use scented Dr. Bronners (or another castille soap) for the soap. I don't know if this will work, but it is worth a try.

-Put some EOs on a cloth and put that in your dryer while you dry.

-Put a sachet of dried herbs (like lavender or chamomile or even a tea bag) in your clothing drawers.

  • This is awesome, I'm going to use one of these recipes.

@barbnsteve, is that a dry recipe or do you make it a liquid?
