Dh and I just recently finished our back yard and we now have an amazing patio with a built in fire pit that we did ourselves. I am going to have a Cinco de Mayo party and need some ideas for food and drink also maybe a few ideas for decor. TIA
Re: Cinco de Mayo
Food: You might find some inspiration at http://www.kqed.org/tv/programs/index.jsp?pgmid=14185
We're just doing tacos, burritos and enchiladas. I want to do guacamole and mexican shrimp cocktail but we are only having another couple come over. I'm also planning to make Pastel de Tres Leches.
Drink: Tequila and sangrita, coronas, margaritas, kahlua, "fruit water" (I can't remember the proper name) and mexican hot chocolate.
Decor: Anything bright. Mexican paper flowers are easy to make and cheap.
I think it depends on how many people you're having and what you want to spend. I would do a taco/burrito bar with a variety of meats (burger, shredded chicken, chorizo, etc.) and toppings (lettuce, black beans, pinto beans, cheese, tomato salsa, cilantro rice, tomatillo salsa, guacamole, sour cream, jalapenos, tomatoes, etc.). It's easy, people like it and you can make it as simple or as extravagant as you like which will lead to how much you spend!
You could do different sides such as beans, Mexican rice, Mexican fried corn, etc.
If you want apps, I would keep it simple and do taquitos, empanadas, etc.
For dessert, you can go simple and do margarita cupcakes (or cake).
Beverages, I would have soda, water, etc. but for alcohol, you could do Corona and/or Dos Equis for beer, margaritas, strawberry daquiris, pina coladas, Miami vices (mixing straw. daquiri with pina colada), etc. Sangria is more of a Spanish thing but it's good and would go with everything as well!
As for decor, I would keep it simple but use bright festive colors....yellow, red, pink, blue, etc.
You could get a couple of sombreros to put out or even serve some of the food in...put a bowl inside of the hat and fill with chips or put ice in and fill with beer!
You could get some Mexican blankets to lay out or decorate the tables with, get a pinata and fill it with the candy or something a little more adult-friendly (mini-bottles of liquor, lotto tickets, condoms, etc.). That really depends on your crowd, age(s) of guests and how much you want to spend!
One word: pinata
At a work event at a Mexican restaurant, we had a few pinatas and people loved it. GL!
You can do a taco bar. Have some salsa, guac and/or layer bean dip for chips. Serve margaritas, cornoas and dos equis of course!
Oriental trading usually has sets of sombreros for cheap. Ask everyone to come dressed for the theme.
Have fun!
I recently made these Slow Cooker Shredded Beef Tacos, and they would be great for a large group.
here's some decor ideas:

Well this would partially depend upon the number of people you are planning to have. But I'd think:
Sour Cream Chicken Enchiladas & Plain Cheese enchiladas
And then I'd take advantage of the new back yard and grill up beef fajita meet (& possibly chicken depending on your crowd). Then set up a table with all the "fixins" : cheese, sour cream, quac, pico, reg. salsa, lettuce, tomato. I'd also have hard and soft taco shells available.
For sides: Black Beans, Queso, Rice, & a roasted veggie dish (squash, zuccinie, onion). I think it's important to have some fresh items available.
Dessert: Margarita Cupcakes & Tres Leches Cake.
Drinks: Margaritas (from scratch.... they're so much better & not hard at all), Dox XX, Corona, lemonade, & water.
I LIKE THIS IDEA!!!!
