Earth Day events in your city

I'm pretty disappointed in my city.. there is very little going on around me to do with Earth day.  There are a few events sprinkled here and there last weekend and this weekend, but scarce.

Also, I have a toddler and so a lot of the events exclude us being able to go, like picking up trash on a highway or hikes that aren't good for smaller kids.

I get frustrated.  I have a degree in environmental studies and I don't understand why there aren't quick programs for little kids on making something recycled (like out of a soda bottle, can, or milk jug).  Someone told me that events are being cancelled because of budget cutbacks, but I imagine you could host a program virtually free (like by collecting some recyclables to use for crafts or a terrarium or something).

Bummed out, but I will certainly be doing some activities on my own with my girls :)

Re: Earth Day events in your city

  • What activities are you planning on doing?
  • I think we'll start some seedlings inside, perhaps start a terrarium, maybe do something like a nature scavenger hunt.  I will prob look online for crafts to do with empty milk cartons or whatnot, do those this weekend.
  • You could always spend the day outside, maybe at a park.  I think that's the best way to spend Earth Day.  I'm planting trees tomorrow and going camping this weekend.  I'm going to see if I can talk DH into making a family Wink

ETA: To answer your question, the D.C. area has a ton of activities.  I didn't find much from Googling "D.C. Earth Day activities" or whatever, so I started checking the "events" page of local non-profit environmental groups, regional environmental councils, and local food websites.  That's how I found the tree planting I'm doing tomorrow.  The D.C Climate Rally on the Mall is this Sunday, but I'll be camping.  If it rains Saturday night I'll go to the rally.
