Tell me all about lavender

I am seriously considering putting up a shrub.

TIA

Re: Tell me all about lavender

  • Smells great and is easy to grow.  Lavender plants like warm, sunny spots.  They also tolerate drought really well, and prefer well-drained soil.  They do great in containers too!
  • I have a few plants. They are pretty low maintenance, and they don't mind dry, clay soil.

They don't always flower though. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. When they do, they are a gorgeous shade of purple!

  • Super easy!  Mine looks like it's about to bloom so I'm anxiously watching it.
  • Very hardy, at least when I planted it. It survived 3' snow in MD, and survived being put in planters on our front porch in the Poconos. It smells great, dries beautifully, and grows like a weed.

  • hmm, now I am wondering how I killed my lavendar off over the winter.  I guess I will give it another week or two before yanking it out.

Are you sure you planted a variety that would survive in your zone?  I've purchased some that only last one season.  Last year I planted a different variety and it survived being buried under about 4' of snow.

  • We just bought a house and the previous owner had a lavender plant in the raised square foot garden.  I've left it in there and it's beginning to flower.

Why do you think she included it in the vegetable garden?  Does it keep pests away?  Attract bees for pollination?

they keep away mosquitos, so we have several in containers on our deck.  cats also don't like them, so if you've got kitties using some part of your yard as a litterbox, plant lavender.

mosquitos don't like, cats don't like (keeps them out of the garden), and bees LOVE lavender.  and sage, too.

Bingo.  She had a cat, so I bet she planted it to keep it out of her garden.

It's lovely, but it's getting big and taking up valuable gardening space.  What can I do to trim it?  Should I keep it there, or transplant it to another flower bed?

  • Doesn't survive in my cold area of the world!  Perhaps another variety would be better, like a PP said?
