compost?

Anyone do their own compost?  Was it a lot of work to set up?  What do you use, and how big is the container or area?

Re: compost?

  • we have one in the corner of our yard. DH had salvaged some old wooden flats from a warehouse and he used those to make it. Took him maybe ten minutes to screw them together. It only has three sides so we have space to go in and turn it. But overall its no bigger then 3x3. We cant do anything outside of lawn clippings/leaves since my chihuahua likes to get in it.

We did one last year to and when we pulled the dirt/mulch it was so dark ... looked like great dirt! Not that Im a dirt expert by any means. :)

Ive seen some turning ones at homedepot that look pretty cool, think they were under $100. They kind of look like the oldschool bingo machines but black plastic.

  • Wooden flats are a really good idea, I bet we could get a few of those off Craigslist!

  • yah because people cant get rid of them! when Im driving around town I see signs all the time for free ones. You will only need 3 or 4 depending on how many sides you want. And because they have the openings it gets enough air to breath and do its thing :)

  • I have one going in a secluded corner of the yard, and I don't have any type of container.  I've just added grass clippings, leaves, and food scraps into a big pile in a shaded corner of the yard and I turn it frequently.

You want worms and bugs to be able to get to your pile, so I'm not sure how the elevated bins work (you may have to add bugs).  Another easy solution is to use a plastic garbage can with a lid, but drill holes in the bottom for bugs to enter.

  • We have a tumbler style composter in the back yard. LOVE it!
  • We have one that we bought years (5?) ago from an online company.  It's just the big black bin with the opening at the bottom.  I love it---we "harvest" it every fall and put it in the flower and vegetable beds.

If I would do it again, I would get a spinning/rotating one.  I think costco has one.
