Baby name freak out...(I know this isn't a baby board...but I love you ladies the best)

So, DH and I finally decided on baby names. I know, finally, right? Cause I've been pregnant for SOOO long and all. But anyway.

We decided on Gisele Solange for a girl (my step-grandmother and grandmother's names. I'm Angela Solange after both my grandmothers) and we'll call her Elle or Ellie.

For a boy, Oliver Miguel, because DH is obsessed with having an Ollie and I refuse to use that as a first name! So, we'd be calling him Ollie.

So I'm cruising the Baby Names board over on the Bump and someone made a post about how beautiful Giselle is, except that it reminds her of jizz so she could never name her daughter that. Now I'm obsessed with kids calling Gisele jizz...I never even thought about that, especially since we spell/say it the french way which which sounds more like Sjuh-sell (I can't get it quite right...but it is a soft g soft s). Ugh. I don't want to obsess about this for the next 6 months/rest of her life!

So really, this is more of a vent than anything else :).

  • Some people are stupid. It's a very pretty name- very delicate. When I was pregnant, my daughter was to be Arizona (Zoe for short). We were talked out of it, and came up with Sidney. It's a nice name, but I wish we had stuck to our guns. Teach your daughter to have a mean right hook, and no one will tease her about her name. In truth, kids are evil, and even with a perfect name they'll find something else to criticize.
  • Honestly, kids aren't going to have a clue what that is until they're older and, like Karma said, teach her a mean punch or two and the problem is solved.  :-P  Kids are dumb but there isn't a thing wrong with either of the names you've picked.  I think Oliver is darling and Gisele is just very graceful and unique.  Very few of us escaped childhood without someone doing something stupid with our names - I think it is some sort of lame right of passage.  It isn't like you're naming them Placenta (my mom was a nurse in the ER and had to have a "I can't force you to change your child's name but really think about the long term effects of a name like that before you sign that piece of paper making it official" conversation with a patient once!) or something equally odd.
  • Ha! Don't get me started- I work for a Children's Hospital- in the name of HIPPA I cant reveal specifics, but a recent fave was "Lucious" last name of a former president or small tree....

  • I think Gisele is a beautiful name!  Don't listen to people that have their brains in the gutter- jizz, I mean really?!?  Who deduces that from Gisele?

So glad that you and Juan have decided on names!  Now if I could get my H and I to agree on something... he wants an Aztec name like Xochitl (for a girl) which means flower.  It's pronounced Soh-Chee.  I am worried people will never be able to pronounce it when reading it.

  • lol.....kids are mean as hell and will make fun of your name regardless of what it is!  I'm with Karma....a good punch in the arm solves everything.  I like the name Giselle, VERY pretty.  I loved the name Annalise but I don't want my kid to be called anal..... Embarrassed
  • Aw, don't listen to them.  Some people just want to be hurtful for no reason.  I think Gisele is a beautiful name.  I am very partial to French names--they are so feminine and delicate.

"Jizz," really?  My first association was Tom Brady's wife/baby mama.  Much better to share a name with a supermodel, I think.

  • Angela, Don't pay attention to those beetches.  Gisel is a lovely, delicate name.  If ou're worried about it, remember, the accent falls on the second sylable; so, it'll take kids a while to think "jizz" up.

Nicole, Xochitl is an awesome name!  Want a boy's name?  Try Tetlepanquetzal.  My cousin has it, we just call him "Tetle" because it's sooooo much easier.

Gisele is pretty.  I'm not a huge fan of the middle name, but nobody uses middle names anyway, right?  I don't know where anybody would come up with "Jizz" as a nickname.  I don't think you should worry about that.  Nicknames will develop naturally as they always do.  I would probably warn you that if you want it to be pronounced like a French name, she will have her name mispronounced for her whole life.  There's no way I would ever get "Sjuh-sell" from Gisele.  I would pronounce it "Giz-elle" every time.  I know names are tricky but I hate when people just spell mine wrong and that's just spelling.  Sometimes I wish my mom had just used "y" instead of "ie" so I wouldn't get so frustrated.

My only question is... if you want to call her Elle or Ellie, why don't you just name her Elle or Ellie?  It drives me crazy when people name their kids with no intention of calling them by it.

    P.S. I really like Oliver for a boy. :)

  • Thank you all, I feel much better! I talked to DH about it last night and he was really "whatever" about it, which helped. I'm ok with other people saying Giz-elle, me/DH/my fam say it the french way and his will say it the hispanic way (His-elle), and everyone else will say it the American way...unless she has a preference. (I was used to this as a kid, since much of my family is french speaking only, so I figure she'll figure it out and adjust :))

It is more of the family-name thing since Gisele and Solange are both in the family. My grandmother is also Angela and it was always confusing when we were places together...especially since we both had the same last name, too! So I guess the nickname is just a way to differentiate.

When it comes down to it, who knows what we'll end up calling her since my mom's original plan was to call me Angie to remove confusion and I absolutely 190% hate Angie and refuse to be called that.

And Nicole, that name is beautiful...but I would have NO idea how to say it if a saw it on paper. Are Aztec names common at all where you live? If so, you probably won't have much of a problem :).

DH and I, shockingly, were really not into any Hispanic names that aren't already in the family. BIL/SIL were really disappointed that we were looking at mainly European names...I finally had to look at SIL and say "you do remember I'm white, right? It isn't wrong to represent my culture somewhere in there, too."

  • Ya know, Kids are going to find any excuse to make fun of a name - first or last. Just thinking back to grade school I can think of so many examples...

Debra was made fun of because she had "bra" in her name.

My BF's initials were E.T. which of course led to many alien jokes.

Those of you who know my maiden name via FB know I was made fun of a lot for that.  (The jokes got old REAL fast.)

    Anna was AnnaBanana...

I could go on and on.  I don't think there is anything wrong with Gizelle - I think it's pretty!   If, by chance, she does get some wise cracks about her name, just remember that there are very few names that can't be creatively twisted into one joke or another...

  • Don't listen to them.  It doesn't matter what the name is kids are mean and they will find something to rhyme with it or shorten it or what ever!  PLUS atleast you are using a classic name!  How many people are making up names because they want their childs name to be unique....that frustrates me.  Anyways, point being I think it is a beautiful name!  A name that will be beautiufl as a child or an adult.  Keep it and don't let peoples opinions bother you.  Because everyone has one and you will not always agree with it :)

  • That's dumb. It didn't even occur to me. Giselle is a really pretty name. I think it's a great combo of unique but not weird, which is hard to come by! Love love love Oliver too. When do you find out what you're having??

June 16th :). I'm anxious for it to get here, just so I can really start planning the nursery and registering and all of the 'fun' stuff!
