anyone in the advertising field?

My husband and I live in the DC area and we have been considering a move to a couple of cities, and we are seriously considering Portland.  We are expecting our first baby and looking for a house, which has proved to be a very frustrating experience. It is so expensive.  And if you find something you like it isn't unusual to have 5-10 bids placed.  We will continue to look, but we have talked about relocating if nothing pans out. We know that Portland is more affordable than DC, plus it is a good place to raise a family. And my brother lives there which is a huge bonus.  Our big challenge will be finding jobs.  I am in the advertising field, media specifically. So I was wondering if anyone on this board is in the advertising field or know anyone that is? I know there are lots of agencies in the area there from doing research.  But I am unsure of what that job market is like.  We wouldn't move this year, so this question may be premature, but I have been thinking about it quite a bit and would like to get some feedback if at all possible.
Thanks!

Re: anyone in the advertising field?

  • I'm not in advertising - just a full time student who won't work while in school.  : )  But the job market here sucks seriously bad right now in every field I can think of.  I would not consider moving here without a job lined up because it's so bad.  It's not uncommon for people - with degrees - to spend 6 months or longer looking for any kind of job.  : (

  • It's awesome that you guys are thinking about moving to OR but unfortunately OR has the number two unemployment rate in the country right now. I have a degree and quite a bit of work experience...my husband and I moved here last July for him to go to law school. It took me from the first week of July until the first week of March to land a job...and the job I have is contract through a temp agency right now. For most of that time I was spending 40+ hours a week applying for jobs...

I'm sorry to be such a downer, but I just want to show you how sucky the market is right now...I was miserable for the last 8 months and I wouldn't want anyone else to be in that same boat.

Oh, and I'm making quite a bit less than I was making in my old job before we moved..and I moved from Michigan where the unemployment rate is slightly worse than OR.

So...if you're serious about relocating out here, I would say only do it if you've got jobs lined up first.

And sorry, no, I don't know anyone in the marketing industry, sorry! Good luck!

  • I have a friend who works in advertising at Wieden Kennedy and they are getting business but I think they're taking business that they wouldn't otherwise take...and that's because they're W+K. I have heard that other, smaller agencies in town are having a hard time. Portland is a HUGELY creative community. Lots and lots of creatives have moved here, which is part of what makes it such a great city. But, as a result, there are lots and lots of creatives out of work right now. I think if you talk to most people in the creative industry around here they will tell you that the market is way past saturated.

That being said, things could change in a year. Like the others have said, my recommendation is to make sure you have jobs before you move here. It seems many have moved here thinking they would figure it out once they got here, that they just want to be in PDX, only to find that they're still unemployed months and months later.
