I may never grow from seed again.

I have killed my seedlings and started over. The second round of seedlings are meager at best.

Then, I find healthy tomato plants 4/$1.14. I bought 8 plants for less than $3. I found the varieties that I wanted too.

Now, if only I could find some sweet basil. Last year I had no problem finding it, but this year I have difficulty.

Re: I may never grow from seed again.

  • Don't feel bad. I suck at seed starting too. My best bet is to direct sow them and go from there. I just don't have the space to do it right I guess! LOL

  • I only start things from seed if I plant directly into the ground.
  • I actually found sweet basil at Walmart.

  • I used to majorly suck at starting seed.  I'm a little better this year, but things haven't gone in the ground yet, so there's still plenty of time for me to fail.

    You're not alone.

  • You can "make" a basil plant from a bunch of basil purchased at the grocery store:

-cut the end off the stem.
    - strip all but the top 1-2 pair of leaves
-place in a glass of water.  Add/change water as needed
    -Wait.

In about a week or so, you should have roots developing in the places you took off the lower leaves.

Starting from a seed is an art and a science.  I finally have mastered it after 5 years, Putit takes a lot of ptience.
  • I got one of those seed sowing thingies this year.  Worked on my herbs!  I had seedlings that I transplanted into full sized pots this weekend.  Hope they last!

  • i just got a little tiny pot of sweet basil from the $1 section at target.  it sprouted right away and is now growing happily in my kitchen window.
