Anyone have an underground sprinkler system in a colder climate?

The new house we just bought has not yet had any landscaping. We're considering putting in a sprinkler system, but DH thinks it's too much work for our cold climate (Alberta, Canada) because the system has to be flushed before the winter, etc. and wouldn't be worthwhile in our 2000 sqft. back  yard.

Anyone in colder climate have any advise on to do or not to do or any tips on what kind of system to look for?

  • We have one because it came with the house we bought. In the fall we took an air compressor and blew out the irrigation pipes. It was pretty quick and easy. You can also hire a lawn company to do it for you. It should be under $100 to hire someone.

  • Our house came with one. We haven't used it yet, but the only special maintenance is the blowing out the pipes in September-ish. If you have an air compressor, you can do it yourself. If not, there are always guys pimping the service on kijiji for about $20.

  • Ditto on only needing to get it blown out before the winter.

We have one and love love love it.  It makes keeping up with watering so easy. Though we have a much bigger lawn so to water the front yard we would need to move our sprinkler around to 5 or 6 different locations in the front only and 3 or 4 locations in the back yard.

  • I'm in northern BC and have one, and my yard is super tiny.  I get it blown out at the beginning of October each year for $35.  It's great because I often have to go away for weeks at a time in the summer, so my lawn stays green.  It's also better for water conservation because I can set the sprinkler to go off in the middle of the night to reduce evaporation before the water gets down to the roots.
