Which mac would you buy?

I have wanted a MacBook for a long time. Dh told me recently that a colleague of his is selling his year old MacBook pro, and the colleague even gave it to dh yesterday to bring home for me to play with. Here's the thing: because it's only a year old and he has the apple care warranty on it, he's asking for kind of a lot of money for it. I'm a state employee, so I get a discount on apple products, and last night I looked up what a similar brand new MacBook pro would cost. Turns out brand new is only 300-400 more, with a slight (0.4 ghz) increasein processor speed, the illuminated keyboard, and pone more year on the warranty.

Which would you buy, a new one or the used one? The processor speed doesn't seem like that big of a deal - it's not like I'll be running final cut pro or anything on there. Honestly, I'm most hung up on the illuminated keyboard. Dh's work computer has one, and it is sooooooooo nice.

ETA: I tried doing a clicky poll, but I guess you can't from a phone...

Re: Which mac would you buy?

  • did you factor in software? does the used one have office and/or any other software you'll need?

will there be software you want to buy? an illuminated keyboard is nice but IMO, for $300-$400 you could buy some nice software or something else.

personally, I'd buy the used since it still has a warranty and you know the person who is selling it.

  • Are you sure it doesn't have an illuminated keyboard?  I got my MacBook Pro in February 2008, so it's more than a year old, and it has an illuminated keyboard.  Is the setting for it just turned off or something?

  • hmmm, that's a tough call.  I'm all about buying used, but I don't know about a computer.  I remember mrsbecko saying her mac laptop (don't know if it's a macbook) had an issue, was still under warranty, but they didn't cover it due to something or other.

it would just be a bummer if something did go wrong and the warranty didn't cover it.

  • There's definitely no illuminated keyboard on the used one - evidently it was only available on some models.

I could definitely spend the extra money on software...although, with the deal I've worked out with DH, I can afford the software either way. The used one doesn't come with anything additional pre-loaded, just a clean OS install.

I definitely need to read the fine print on AppleCare before we buy used (if we buy used) before we buy to be sure it's transferable.
  • i'd buy new. computers have such short life-spans. i think $300-400 is worth the extra year of use.

my macbook pro is 2 years old and has an illuminated keyboard...  and my powerbook is 4-5 years old and has an illuminated keyboard. i think it's odd that your friend's doesn't.

  • I disagree about the lifespan. Apple's computers hold up really well over time. Prior to my mac, I had to upgrade the hardware in my HP every year and a half. I have the standard macbook from 2006, haven't added anything hardware-wise and it does just fine.

That said, the new macbook has the Nvidia graphics chip, which is amazing. Not sure what you plan to use your computer for but if you work with photoshop, any video editing program, play games or watch movies on your computer, the new chip will make a huge difference.

  • Definitely the new one. We're about to buy a MacBookPro and have been discussing it with my brother, who has worked for Apple for a long time. He thinks the new processor is worth it since the new version just came out and won't be outdated for a while. Plus, I'm also a fan of the new graphics thing. Otherwise, I'd buy a refurb.

  • Apple care is transferable, and if you wanted to get it extended, you could. Apple offers a 2 year extension, if you add it on before the warranty expires.

You may want to check the serial number on the computer. Illuminated keyboards have been standard for a while, I believe, so this might be an older model.

The new processors are way faster, so you might think that it is worth it to get a new model. I have last year's unibody model though work, and even I am lusting after the new models!
