Do you ever not recycle something - -

Because it is so disgusting?  Like a tupperware type container that is filled with moldy leftovers?

I have done this a *few* times in my life - less than 5 probably.  Just when the contents are sooo vile...

Although we are the greenest we ever have been, I'm probably more likely to do it now, since I am so busy with my two kids and I have less patience (like if DH leaves leftovers in the fridge for 3 months :P

Re: Do you ever not recycle something - -

  • Yes. I too have 2 kids and reduced patience. I greenwash myself saying that I do other green things to offset my guilty waste. Carbon neutral? Something to make it OK?
  • I don't have a problem with nasty containers, but I am guilty of not recycling something if it's really sweet or sticky, like jelly jars.  We got a serious ant problem in our outdoor recycling bin one time from a not properly rinsed out jelly jar, and I think that contributed to our occasional indoor ant problem.  So I admit, I don't usually recycle our jelly jars unless they become empty very close to recycling day.

  • Once in a while, the thought of getting the peanut butter out of a jar just turns my stomach.  And in that case, I have been guilty in the past of just throwing it away.  It kind of makes me feel like a bad person.

  • If it is really sticky sometimes we'll put a jar in the dishwasher. Its one jar in the whole load. I figure we save hassle and energy by washing it out that way.

I couldn't bring myself to throw away glass. Plastic maybe, as it is still burned for energy here, but not glass.

  • I've never tossed official tupperware like containers, but I do toss the plastic ones you get for takeout most of the time at the office.
