Speaking of solar

Anyone have any solar 101 resources...I'm reading solarhome.org and it says you can get a 200 watt panel for $1,800...We use an average of 550 watts/mo of electricity. Wondering how much of a factor installation is and such because for $2,500 (2 panels less the tax credit!) I'm in!!

Re: Speaking of solar

  • Are you sure you don't use 550 kilowatts monthly?

  • I'm confused... that's what it says.

  • A kilowatt is 1000 watts.

You would need much more than 2 panels to meet your needs.

  • Ha - sorry... it's a 200 kilowatt panel.

However, your response did make me realize that it probably produces 200kw a year, not a month huh?

I knew it couldn't be that simple.

Still, I wonder how much it would take to make it a worthwhile investment and how long the ROI is.

  • OH - it's not in kilowatts... wow, now I know why most people don't have solar.

Looking at it, I'm not even sure how to calculate how many I would need...does it mean that it can produce 224 watts at one time making it much larger than we'd need? Does anyone know what a standard size is for residential?

My curiosity is really peaked now.

  • OK starting to feel like a PW, but I found this calculator that estimates the cost of installing a system for offsetting varying percentages of your usage.
