hey i thought we'd continue the conversation here instead of on the other thread....
even though the one-size diapers look HUGE on them when they are smaller, i don't really care about that for overnight b/c no one's going to see them and it's not like they are mobile to where the diaper is weighing them down LOL though it's funny b/c DH says that A would have rolled sooner if it weren't for her diapers weighing her down LOL
i think i started BG organics on A when she was about 9-10lbs actually... i didn't put them on her during the day until about 12 lbs. For the goodmamas i think i definitely waited until about 12 lbs b/c they are super bulky but i have found them sooo absorbent so for now they are my go-to overnight diaper. even though she only sleeps one big long stretch, we do a dream feed at night before *I* go to sleep (she's already been asleep 1-2 hrs at that point) and then another dream feed in the AM when she wakes up so all in all she is usually in her overnight system for about 10-12 hrs. yes, it's super soaking wet and i kind of feel bad about it, but since it doesn't irritate her skin and it helps me get more sleep, i do it
she isn't much bigger than Jack is right now either LOL she's somewhere between 14-15 lbs right now!
if you want something trimmer than goodmamas for overnight i am sure the BG organic w/a hemp doubler would be great.
i know some people use the regular BG and swear by them but i've also seen a lot of posts on diaperswappers re: diaper stink and issues w/the microfiber so that's why all of A's diapers are natural fabrics.
you know about the BG promo they're doing right now, right? there's a coupon in mothering magazine where if you buy $10 of BG products you get a free sized AIO for free. a lot of online retailers are getting the magazines and clipping and sending in the coupons for you so you don't have to deal w/it. i know abby's lane was doing that initially but after 300 coupons were redeemed she switched it to a $25 purchase to get the coupon and AIO free. still, it's a great deal b/c you can buy an organic for $25 and get a free AIO. you can then either try out the microfiber AIO and see how you like it, or you can sell it and get a great net price on another BG organic
Re: mauiwedding08
good idea... thanks for the tips. I just struggle with the diapers that snap right now because his legs are kind of skinny but even in the last couple of days things are starting to work better. I will have to try a good mama again soon - I went and bought another thirsties duo in the larger size so that should fit over the bulk of a GM.
I did use those coupons! I had one in Mothering and the MW office let me cut one out of one of their pregnancy magazines and I used both at the local CD store so I have some of the microfiber AIO and 2 of the organic AIO - even those those 2 are snaps they did fit Jack a couple of weeks ago and I really like them - just not sold on the price LOL - wish they had come up in the seconds sale last night - thanks for posting that by way. I saw it when I was looking at the board from my phone while BFing and was able to buy a couple one size pockets for daycare.
I guess as long as his skin continues not to mind the wetness I shouldn't let it bother me - don't they say that helps them potty learn earlier
that's why i didn't like the flip covers... i didn't get a good fit w/them b/c they have snaps and i was worried she'd have an explosive poo and it'd get on something if the cover wasn't snug. i get a pretty good fit w/the BG organics even though they are snap...since A is so small, even now we JUST transitioned to having it to where there are 2 sets of snaps showing when i close the diaper. her thighs are starting to get some chunk to them and i love it
i squeeze her rolls and tell her "i love your chubby legs!" and 9 times out of 10 she giggles when i say that LOL i love it!
yeah i had to get the duos in size 2 to fit over the goodmama...before that i was just using the bg organics overnight. FYI there's another thirsties sale (across all CD stores) again coming about mid-june so you might be ready to stock up on some more size 2 covers then if you need them.
i agree that the BG organics are pricey... which is why we don't have a stash of them!! i have 3 that we rotate through that i got all in excellent used condition... two were $15 each and the 3rd was $17 b/c it was only used twice before being sold. i know that you'll see brand new not washed/worn ones on diaperswappers for about $22 including shipping. a little cheaper but still a bit pricey. i was wishing they had seconds in the organics the other night too... i was surprised the seconds lasted as long as they did...last time i got that email they were gone in 30 minutes!! glad you were able to get some
Karen from GMD has good info on natural vs synthetic fibers on their site, i've C&P'd it below
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What about the stay-dry all-in-one type diapers and pocket diapers I see everywhere online?
Polyester (suedecloth, microfiber, microterry, fleece) is made from petroleum. Some babies are sensitive or allergic to polyester, polyester fleece or suedecloth, and stink issues are often reported because synthetics are hard to wash, often requiring stripping. Synthetic diapers hold odors and detergent residue, unlike cotton. We recommend cotton diapers, especially for newborns, as the tried and true best material for diapers, proven over many generations. You'll need to make your own decision about synthetic diapering. We have been selling cloth diapers since 1998 and we choose to sell 100% cotton diapers. We do not sell synthetic pockets or synthetic fitted diapers. You will not find any microfiber stuffing or inserts here. Successful washing is very important to successful cloth diapering. Clean diapers help keep baby rash-free and cotton is easy to get clean. I cannot emphasize how important it is to have diapers that don't hold stink. Even a 90% cotton/10% polyester diaper will hold the stink more than a 100% cotton diaper. Get all-cotton. All of the diapers we sell are 100% cotton. Plus, cotton is not sweaty like synthetics. I love cotton! (sorry about the cotton sermon, but I'm quite passionate about it.)
Bamboo? Sorry, we don't care for that either so we don't sell any. It's really rayon, and if you research the chemical process that it must go through from plant to fabric, you might also wonder how this can be referred to as "natural". Besides, as a diapering fabric I found it very heavy, hard to wash and very hard to dry. I still love cotton the best.
What about "stay dry"? Personally, I am unconvinced about this, but we do offer 2 stay-dry doublers and a stay-dry fleece liner for those customers who desire that. I know the TV commercials say "keeps baby dry". We are "overmarketed" into believing that damp cotton next to baby's bottom is a problem. It's really not! Just change baby before it's totally sopping and baby is fine. Every 1.5 hours or so for a newborn in daytime, 2-3 hours for an older baby for daytime. This varies of course. Frequent changing is healthy. When you have cloth diapers, you have freedom to change often if you want to. A few "extra" diapers to wash is no big deal. It's not like throwing a quarter away each time you change baby. It's a wonderful freedom to change baby as often as you want to without the guilt of throwing away money and adding to the garbage pile. I love the freedom of cotton diapering, with real cotton. 100% cotton next to baby's bottom, in our experience, is the best for a rash-free bottom.
Karen's opinion on breathablility: The only covers that you can really tell are very breathable are wool. All of the synthetics (non-wools, or "regular covers") are fine inside, but in real life I notice no difference in breathability from one brand of cover to the next. So don't get hung up on trying to figure out which regular cover is the most breathable. Pick which one suits your baby for fit, price and other reasons instead.
Yes, there are a lot of choices. But remember, picking out your diapering supplies is the hardest part about cloth! Take a deep breath. Spend some time reading the site and studying the pictures. There is a lot of information here, so expect to spend time studying and learning. Then just go for it and choose what seems interesting to you. We do have an easy return policy, to help relax the difficult decision process. Cloth is so soft, fun and cute! You will be very glad you have chosen cloth (and perhaps happy to finally have this product selection process over with, too!) Please stay awhile and browse with us. We are happy to share our love for safe cloth diapers with you. Sincerely, Karen.

I should start looking for the BG Organics used b/c I do like them a lot. I like the idea of natural fibers but definitely have some regular FBs and BGs.
I wasn't a fan of the flip diaper either. MIL bought us one cover and 3 inserts in a CD buying frenzy during her last visit. not sure what happened but J peed one day (not even very much because I had literally JUST put it on him) and it started dripping out the top side - so much that I wondered if I had somehow missed him peeing on his clothes without his diaper on during the change. I just leave it and an insert in my car for emergencies.
I will keep an eye out for the sale. I like the occasional cheaper prices online but I also don't mind paying MSRP at the local store because they are sooooo nice and helpful. I like supporting them - I want them to stay in business!! They always honor the manufactures discounts, like the % off BG was having a while ago but everything is always MSRP and I have to pay local tax of course
but on principle I do make an effort to buy stuff there if I know they carry it.
