Anyone deliver kittens at home?? Question

We have adopted (or she has adopted us) a stray cat who is extremely pregnant.  We took her to the vet last week when we brought her in and the vet said she looks great, gave her a flea treatment and said she has a bad cold from being outside in all the rain and stress, but other then that looks healthy.  She also said she was probably about a week away from giving birth.  Over the past couple days we have noticed a slight pinkish discharge from her.  Not a constant discharge, but a bit here and there.  She usually cleans it up once it starts to come out.  She is still acting normal....extremely sweet, purring constantly and just a love bug so I don't think it is anything bad, but wanted to see if anyone had experience with this before.  If I notice it later when I get home I will probably call the vet to be on the safe side.

I wasn't expecting to have a pregnant cat in the house, but I am kind of excited about the kittens coming.  The next phase will be finding homes for everyone!!  Smile

Re: Anyone deliver kittens at home?? Question

  • In my experience, it sounds like she is ready to pop those kitties out anyday now! The discharge is normal and I have seen it before. Make sure you keep the kittens for about 8 weeks, and always charge a small adoption fee, there are lots of people out there who like to adopt kittens, rats and small rabbits to feed as food to their snakes, reptiles, etc. It's more common than you think, and they never want to pay even $20 for them. Just an FYI from a crazy cat lady :)

  • Thanks for the advice!!  I will make sure I do that.  That just makes me sick!!  I couldn't turn away this pregnant little girl because she is such a sweetheart and needs help.  The thought of someone feeding a kitten to a snake or some other animal just gets to me!!
  • When animals give birth, it's called Whelping, according to my sister who is a vet tech.  She said there's plenty of books on the topic but you might not have that much time so I'm sure you could google it.

  • You really won't need to do much. You should probably keep her some place that you won't mind getting "messy". When my Mama cat (stray as well) had her kittens she had them under a table. She then cleaned them and brought them some place "clean". On a sad note, she did have one that did not make it, so if she has the kittens under something, make sure you check. You don't want any surprises. Good Luck!
