East Portland Neighborhood Recs?

So do any of you live in a NE or SE Portland neighborhood that you love? Any areas that you would recommend to stay away from at all costs? Additional thoughts?

Thanks!

Re: East Portland Neighborhood Recs?

  • My H and I are definitely eastsiders. Below are a list of my favorite neighborhoods:

    Sellwood

    Eastmoreland

    Westmoreland

    Belmont

    Mt Tabor

    Laurelhurst

    Clinton

    Irvington

    Alameda

    Beaumont/Wilshire

    Alberta

    St Johns

I would say each of the above have really distinct personalities to them. To know which would serve you best, I think spending some time in each of them is probably the way to go. I would happily live in any of these neighborhoods.

We currently live in Eastmoreland. It has beautiful tree-lined streets, gorgeously maintained homes, a good public grade school (by the standards of public schools in this city). My complaints about it are that it's not really right by a commercial district (little shops, restaurants, etc) and that the tree-lined streets often mean the homes can be dark inside due to the blocked natural light (I like a lot of natural light). You can easily drive (less than 5 minutes) or walk to Westmoreland/Sellwood for shops and restaurants. And the Woodstock area also has some shops and restaurants.

I would also check out Portland Monthly Magazine's "neighborhoods by the numbers" as it gives a nice snapshot of the areas in Portland.

  • I will definitely check that article and those neighborhoods out. Thank you so much!

  • We live just north of the Hollywood area, near Rose City Park and we love it!
  • What do you ladies know about the Sumner neighborhood?
