Favorite Hiking Trail in Los Angeles

I'm looking to go on my first hike with my husband and our dog and was curious what people recommend. I've heard of Runyun and some others...just can't seem to decide. Would love a 2-3 mile hike with good views. We live in Pasadena area and are willing to drive out to Hollywood and everywhere in between (unfortunately not to Malibu area).

Thanks!

Re: Favorite Hiking Trail in Los Angeles

  • There's a trail in Altadena (maybe La Canada) where I go mountain biking but there are a lot of hikers too. It's off of Windsor and Ventura. There's a parking lot overlooking JPL just before the entrance. You would enter the large gate which is open about 7 am and closed at sundown. I believe the name is the Gabrielino Trail and the farthest point is 9 miles, or 18 round trip. If you reach the end of the trail there is a lake and a waterfall from the dam. It's always beautiful and since so few people walk that far it's really peaceful. I believe there are other places to park and start the hike, but that is where I start.

  • We went to a hike in Altadena area as well - but honestly can't remember what it was called.

But you can head to the Angeles Forest for a lot of hiking trails.  We've done Switzer Falls and it leads you down to a waterfall.  It was a lot of fun - and there were plenty of dogs.

  • Runyon Cyn is good for dogs - I think you can take them off-leash past a certain point, but I'm not sure.

I just hiked Fryman Cyn over the weekend and loved it - it's at the top of Mulholland, just West of Laurel Cyn Blvd.  Once you get down into the trail, it's very green, with lots of trees and a little stream.  A few people had their dogs here too.

Eaton Canyon is out in the Altadena area and it's one of the best hikes I've been on in LA. There's a path that leads through a creek and out to a waterfall. Bring shoes you don't mind getting wet.

  • Eaton Canyon is really nice this time of year. I believe you can take different paths for different levels of intensity. Azusa Canyon has some nice hikes as well.

I'd look at local hikes in the San Gabriel foothills..since you are right there already.
