What amount of $ is appropriate as a 1st communion gift?

My niece is making her first communion today and we are going to give her money.  I'm not catholic, so I have no idea what is right here.  What amount is appropriate?  Is $50 good?  Thanks

Alli

  • Liam's is today too. My brother gave him 100.00.
  • we are going to my cousin's daughters in 2 weeks, I was going to give her $100, that's what they gave me for Kelsey's baptism.

  • My neice is making hers next week.  I am giving her 100 and a small gift.  Congrats to Liam!  Beautiful day!
  • When my daughter received hers several years ago we had a fairly large party for her afterwards.  On average she received $100 but if it was from a family she received a bit more.
  • Thanks ladies, I'm glad I asked.  Pat - Congrats to Liam.
  • I guess I am in the minority, but we only give between $50-75 for communions and confirmations- a little more for baptisms. My God Child I gave $100.

    I'm with Kristen on this.

  • For the average person, I give $50.  If it were my niece or nephew, I would probably do $100 and possibly a gift (religious jewelry, bible, etc.)... A very close family friend, I would probably do $75-100...
  • For a niece or nephew, I'd probably do 75 or 100.
  • My niece's is today and we are giving 100.
  • We gave DH's niece $100, but will give $50 to my cousin's daughter.

Just wondering, do you take into account how many guests you're bringing to the party? I'm going to one for a friend's daughter, who invited us & all of our friends, with our kids too... We're wondering if you give the same amount whether 2 or 5 are attending!???
