I am having trouble with soil erosion where one of my gutters drain. The gutter drains on to a cement drainage thing (I don't know the technical term) and the erosion is happening at the end of the cement. I am looking for something to plant there to help prevent the erosion and am having trouble coming up with ideas. I thought allysum might work but I don't know if they like a lot of water. If it helps, I live in zone 5a. TIA!
Re: Plant suggestions?
Buy a large sponge at the dollar store and put it over the area where the water lands. Put a brick, a rock, or some stones round it (on the downslope) to keep it there, and cover the whole thing with mulch. This will absorb and distribute the impact of the water, and decompose over a year.
Then you can plant anything you want in front of your little sponge, depending on whether you have sun or shade, of course. The roots will root right into the sponge as it decomposes. Make sure you chose a moisture-tolerant plant.
Eventually the roots will hold the soil in place and the foliage will break the falling water. Just keep an eye on it while it establishes, so it doesn't get washed away.
