I'm an infrequent poster... but I lurk occasionally and saw your post about not being able to run anymore. I injured my knee a number of years ago... had to re-learn how to walk, got into running and LOVED it. I ran 5 marathons, 6 half marathons and over 20 smaller road races and although I was slow, it was my favorite form of exercise.

I recently had to stop running due to excessive pain in my knees, and following an MRI, learned that I have no cartilage left under my patella in my left knee and significant fraying of the cartilage in my right. Eventually they will replace both of my knees, but as I'm only 35, my doctor is reluctant to do this now. So.

No more running for me. :(

This upsets me greatly, but am starting to find alternative exercises that are fulfilling. If you want some of the suggestions I've gotten, let me know, but for now... I totally understand what you're going through. Sending good thoughts and hugs.

  • Thanks a ton for this post! I just started P90X this week and it's been GREAT. Suggestions are always more than welcome! Thanks!
  • Hopefully you'll see this. (I really want the P90X, by the way... it looks awesome!)

I've heard the Bikram Yoga is fantastic and can give you the runner's high without actually running. (Too expensive for me to test it out right now, but I hope to in the future.)

I've also heard swimming is great for getting in shape and is obviously low impact.

I've found the elliptical works well, although I still have some knee pain.

Biking is supposed to be good, too.

I posted on the Health and Fitness board a few months ago got a LOT of recommendations for various videos, including a walking video (although I'd rather walk outside), and some Pilates and Yoga videos. They included: Leslie Sansone Walk Away the Pounds, yoga podcasts from YogaDownload.com, Mari Windsor Pilates, Ellen Barrett's "The Studio" DVDs, and Yoga Sacred Practice-Vinyasa Flow with Rainbeau Mars.
